Title: Kaiser Dragon Forum
Post by: G.B. (All Vinyl Dragon) on July 31, 2007, 01:05:58 PM
Thought I would Start a Dragon Topic. I love all the Kaiser Frazer Willy's Products. Some will say I am stuck on the All Vinyl Dragon subject ? In My Research I have learned a lot of all the K.F.& W. Vehicles. Most important I have meet some of the most wonderful People in the World in My Research in Our Club. I will post more info about My story later. Plus want to lean more of what other K.F.O.C. Club members have learned. This is what its all about... G.B. LM 4307

Hi, I'm G.B.Bonham LM 4307 K.F.O.C. Member. I to with the help of the Kaiser-Frazer Club found My Dad & Mom Dragon in 7 Months after not knowing what happened to it in 14 Years. We lost it after My Dad passed in California & moved back to the Mid West.We gave it to some friends & they sold it in 1965. I found it in 1979. Folks this was before the day of the computer. I talked to People in the Club all over the Country on the Phone. Some You had to write because they only had the Name & Address . The man that has it did not want to sell. This was fine because it was his First Car & now in his Collection. So a member in Minnesota wanted to sell His A/V Dragon to make room for the Kaiser Airport Bus. I was lucky to that this Dragon  was owned by The Man that started the Dragon List of Owners Dragon in the Club Tom Behnke. He found out about a rare Dragon called an All Vinyl Dragon. Paint 099, Trim 5312. The last Quarterly from the K.F.O.C. Club has a picture on page 2. of the back seat. The supplier was the Carpenter Vinyl Company. Richard Langworth The Last Onslaught on Detroit also was starting a list.I passed the list on to Harold Hagen
http://www.eskimo.com/~hhagen/reg/reg.htm  . Many Club members have had People contact me if any questions about All Vinyl Dragons. If You have one & I know You , Please email & say Hi... Please Anyone that has one also email Me so we can meet. In the past had Tops , Gold , Chrome done for Dragon owners. may start again if needed. Best Regards G.B. Bonham ... email at: gbbonham2000@yahoo.com .....                      Best, G.B.

Just want to contact anyone interested in "vinyl Dragons."  My '53 Holly Mist green vinyl Dragon has been in the family since my Dad purchased it in '59.  All the mechanicals have been restored.  The interior is excellent [except for the carpet].  Currently, we are thinking about restoring the white vinyl top.  Would welcome any info about other Dragons or tips for restoration.

I also have a 53 Dragon, I dont know the the official name of the color, but it is a metallic burgandy or wine red color with a matching interior. I too will need to redo the vinyl top.It has a white top and should be a straw bambu from what I can tell.  It looks to me like the front and rear glass would need to be taken out to put a fresh top on. Does anyone here have experience with them? I have heard it takes about six yards of bambu vinyl to replicate the factory top, does this sound correct? If so, its over $500.00 just for the vinyl.

I have a Vinyl Dragon as well, but Gerald knows about it via Bobby Roads. It is like most of the other known Vinyl Dragons - Holly Frost. At one time the Club thought about 20 or so Vinyl Dragons were made, but there are nearly that many known now.

Hi, Just a Quick Note: I got to see first hand all of the Vinyl for the All Vinyl Dragon. I have known Richard Hanson for a long time, but got to meet in Person last Summer. Looking at the Dragon Bambu Vinyl all looks correct to My Eye's for the Green. Have not got to see any the Color Bambu for other Dragons. Richard needs Credit for finding the rollers in Japan. Plus finding a person to produce it.                                                                                                                    In the 80's & 90's I had Tops made for the All Vinyl Dragon's. Off White Poplin. Vinyl makers have other names for it Today. I will get with the Top maker but been waiting for Other Colors to be produced in the Bambu to be produced... Please respond on what You know about the Bambu ? What Color have You had made... Best, G.B.

Dragon & Other K.F. owners please Note: The Story of Richard Hansen in the Last Two K.F.O.C. New Letter on finding the Vinyl Rollers.  Plus finding some one that would produce the Vinyls again for Our Club. This will help anyone restore the K.F. product that has the Vinyls in them.  We now can do Bambu Tops for other Dragons. I was the one getting the White Tops done in the 80's-90's ... Lets everybody give Richard a big thanks & Thumb's Up. Best, G.B. Bonham L.M. 4307    Here is His email...    mr_blueberry30@hotmail.com

GB, The latest on the all vinyl Dragon that took GOLD at San Diego. after many members young and old trying to figure out WHY THE D---car ran so badly we went thru the ign. carb etc. again. finally found the problem !! the stock air cleaner looked great from the outside BUT the horse hair stuff on the inerds was caked with hard dried oil and dirt. and would not clean up. with it in place it would run kind of , but so rich it would die. my fix i used the same paper air cleaner that was used on the tow motor fork lift with the L-226  and the AMC Plymouth,Nash Hudson etc.  I modified the inside of the stock air cleaner and now its quiet runs down the road  and still looks stock. the NAPA # IS FIL2110

FYI.
Carb cleaner works great on this type of problem. It will remove old gunk easily after several
applications. I don't know if the new carb cleaner works as well as the old (it was powerful
stuff), but it's worth a try. Clean the unit off the car because this stuff may discolor paint etc.

your MarieNichols Laguna  cloth is made to order in YOUR yardage requirementadd 1/3 to the order to do the tuck & roll. There is Very limited requests as there wasn't that many Dragons made to expend money to stock the material in quanity. the colors were BLACK, MAROON GREEN AND BLUE . I had supplied SMS with the positive and negative to make NEW SILK SCREENS and Doug Pollack has DUPLICATED THE WEAVE AND TEXTURE IN THE CLOTH MATERIAL AND THE COLOR IS DEAD ON TO ORIGINAL.  A special note the owner of SMS Doug Pollack had owned a 53 Dragon and Darrin along with a 57 ford retractable hardtop, took them to EUROPE TO SELL TO FINANCE HIS TRIP. The ford sold, the DRAGON sold and he had to bring the Darrin back. One of our members is the present owner of the Darrin -----so Doug has a soft spot for our KAISER'S FRAZERS ETC.         Richard Hansen #3719

I was looking through a recent quarterly today. There was a Dragon article which refered to GB as "John Bohnam." Seems some author has been listening to too many Led Zeppelin albums!  Anyway, the Dragons are really cool and that Onxy car I believe was for sale in Edina, MN, just a few miles from me, a year or so ago. I never went to look at it. I don't like to look at cars that I know I can't get!

Clicking on the link to the Registry leads me to an Eskimo website.

So, is there an official Dragon Registry?

The KFOCI registry is part of that website.  If you follow thorugh on the home page, you will get to a display of information and you can scroll down the make modle info to K530 Dragon.

The only problem with this list is that some people sending information did not send complete (or identify that a tag was off the car)  and that there was no way to indicate status (junked, parts, car, restored, etc).  However, it does have some good info in it.

I have enjoyed this post. I always thought the Dragon was a cool car, although it really is a over priced Manhattan, I'd still love to have one. I looked at the rooster, and the eraliest one known for 53 ( outside the show cars x ) is body #15, yet, the Onxy one in Mo, is # 14, just thought that was interesting. Any idea what the blue one in Ill, number is? thayt one I have thought about getting.  The only complaint I have with this post, is when I clicked on Eskimo, and clicked on the game link, now my daughter wants on my computer, haha, Great post, love hearing about these wonderful Willow run Automobiles.

The custom-order 1953 Dragon does NOT count with the 1,253 regular production Dragons.  Please refer to the info on 1953 Kaiser Dragons and the chicago 6-pack spec ials in KFOCI HANDBOOK Version 4.0.

Members were given a wealth of information that took years to compile; please use it or there is no point to doing the Handbook again.

There were 3 batch runs of the regular Dragons (the specials with leather and special paint are NOT part of the group) according to what is presently known.  This reflects being able to get slots at Ionia Body Company who applied the tops and did the final assembly work on the first 2 batches.  Black dragons were only in the first group as far as it is known.  There were too many problems with the lacquer application (paint would run, orange peel, etc).    This is covered in Richard Langworth's article on the KAISER DRAGON in a past issue of COLLECTABLE AUTOMOBILE.

The PPG set-up is supposed to work off the PAINT number found on car data plates.  The jobber you take this info to should contact the PPG Color Library for the mixing information; they will not have it on hand unless they already mixed the color for someone else in the recent past.  The Color Library will pull their original paint chip standard from the storage vault and scan it with a computer based spectrometer.  It will "read" the chip and print out the current mixing forumla (if it can be devised) for the jobber.  NOTE THERE IS NO CHARGE TO THE JOBBER BY THE COLOR LIBRARY FOR THIS SERVICE.  The expectation is that the jobber will get a paint sale.   Normally the jobber will not disclose the actual formula; this is a suggestion by PPG and not an effort of being nasty.   PPG does not disclose formulas to the general public, only to their jobbers.

It should be noted that there are some "exotic" K-F colors that Ditzler (PPG) did not offer as a mix.  Also, they have colors going back to the 1920's and that some colors may be lacquer only and some may be enamel only.

For more info on this, contact the PPG Customer Service area of their website and let them know you are inquiring about antique automobile paint.

Now I'm intrigued about "non-metal toppings" for the Kaiser-Frazer cars.

I had the idea that
1) All 53 Kaiser Dragons came with a vinyl roof, even if they were not a two-tone.
2) All 1949-(50) Kaiser Virginian hardtops came with a roof topping. Was is vinyl or muslin/poplin fabric?
3) All 51 Frazers including the hardtops came WITHOUT a roof topping.
4) All 51 Kaiser (Manhattan) Dragons came WITHOUT a roof topping

Other than that in 1 or 2, no metal roofed KF cars before 1954 had a vinyl or fabric covering as a regular factory feature...

Am I right?

Jim,
Sorry, I was talking about the 51 Dragons... The Early Dragon package had Two Tone Paint but no Vinyl Top. Late had Tops Vinyl.
The 1952 Year was a short Year in Production. Then late 1952 come the 1953 Kaiser Dragons.

All 1953 Dragons had a Vinyl Sport Top...  Bambu, Poplin - Calvary Grained Canvas, Rust Color Boucle on the Rare Turquoise Dragon. Remember Though if You have a Paint 999/Trim 888 it could be anything someone Special Ordered.

Ah...I had forgotten about the late 51 Dragons. I have seen several of the early 51 Dragons with different two tone paint schemes, and each time they looked somehow like a car that should have had a vinyl roof but somehow didn't. Hard to explain, I know, but they just seemed different somehow from the regular two-tone cars. seemed a slight letdown.

Jim, You are correct on all the others on Sport Top.
Did You see a Member found again One of the Two Black 53 Dragons on the Dragon List ?
Pictures in Auto for Sale here in K.F.O.C. Forum. I hope a Dragon Club Member restores the Black Dragon with it being so Rare...
It is Black with a Black Bambu Top. So Your correct this is Black on Black not a Two tone.
1.) ( All 53 Kaiser Dragons came with a vinyl roof, even if they were not a two-tone.)

Also Note: When I had the White Poplin Tops made with proper seams, 1 or 2  Club Members ordered a Top because We did not have Bambu. Died it the Color the Top should be.

We  now Thanks To: Richard Hansen & SMS have Bambu & other K.F. Vinyls reproduced with Perfect Color. Problem solved...

Dusty, I have the Gas Guards on both of Mine. One come with & one I put on. This was because Our Original Dragon had it.

The Door Guard Factory Chrome accessories ? Is that the extra drip loop above the side Door glass? I thought about that. You can roll Your glass down some & water wont come in...

Kaiser-Frazer offered the chrome strip door moldings starting in 1952 for Kaisers and then expanded to Henry J's in 1953.  I've attached broadsides showing the ventshades for windows and the door moldings.  Ventshade broadside is from 1949.

Thanks kaiserfrazerlibrary, I thought this was what Dusty was talking about.

Door Gard We do a lot Today still. It does protect the Paint.
Vintshades is practical but did not have it on one of My Dragons Yet.
Dusty it is up to You.

I do like the Reverse lights on one of my Dragons. It also has fog lights on both. I have used them in fog.
I sometimes like to see 1953 Kaiser Product without Fog lights on the front. So wish one did not have them. Again Our original did not have them so that may make Me bias...

My '53 J had those door gaurds on it. I removed them when I had it painted back '01. I think they were after-market types but maybe I should install them again.

Dusty asked before in this forum about the initials on the Dragon List Harold Hagen has on the registry list of Dragons.  Who had them and what state. there is a code as to the condition of the car ie. tbr to be restored--hb has been--J junked---gmr ??

I will to tell how the Dragon List got started as it was told to Me. I was lucky to My First  Dragon I got was owned before by The Man that started the Dragon List of Owners in the Club Tom Behnke. He said to Me He found out about a rare Dragon called an All Vinyl Dragon.
Frosted Holly Green metallic / White Poplin- Calvery Canvas Top  Paint 099, Interior Green Bambu with White Boucle Inserts Trim 5312.
Richard Langworth The Last Onslaught on Detroit also was starting a list.

The club registry form I think did have condition things like Show,Driver, TBR, Parts, J. for Junked.
On the Dragon list it is  TBR = Tom Behnke Registry , HB = Richard Langworth Hand Book , & GMR = Gary Micauek Registry.

The Club Member that sold My Dragon to Me said if I ever sold My Dragon I was to pass the list to the New Owner. So when I heard We would put the lists on the New thing called Web - internet, I passed the list on to Harold Hagen
http://www.eskimo.com/~hhagen/reg/reg.htm  .

I work hard to keep the list current. Rare Dragons like the Onyx Dragon on Cars for sale We need to keep track of it. You can help to as a Club Member. Any Dragon You find is important to check the list. If You know it sells try to get them to Join Our Club if not already. Harold Hagen updates often. If it is not on the list You have found one We never had in the club. So see it Is Rare.

It is Fun & We have been doing a Great Job. 1979 had 103 Dragons on the List, Now 172.

Many Club members have had People contact me if any questions about All Vinyl Dragons. If You have one & I know You , Please email & say Hi... Please Anyone has one also email Me so we may meet.
Note: This also includes the Ivory /Green Bambu Top   Paint 106, Interior Green Bambu with Lt Green Boucle inserts Trim 5311.

Oh Yes, Everybody thought TBR was  ( To be Restored )

Best Regards G.B. Bonham ... email at: gbbonham2000@yahoo.com .....

Note: The other 53 Onyx Dragon on the Club registry list was at the New Braunfels, TX National in 1992. It was Hirsch from AZ.
Club Members say He has passed. So looking for the New Owner Today to update the Dragon List. Does anyone know about this other Onyx Dragon on the list ???

Hmmm. I answered this yesterday and now my answer has disappeared. Phil Hirsch was a SoCal  member for many years. He bought his Onyx Dragon used in 1955. At some point, he repainted the black bamboo vinyl roof a creamy white because he thought it looked better. It kinda did look better, but that's opinion. Phil died in the early 1990's and I think Rock Brandt, another SoCal member. Rock moved to AZ and then he died. Maybe Bershauers own the car now. Steve Hermesch will probably know where it is now.

Phil and Rock were both active members back when SoCal had meets every month and high participation. Phil in his Dragon, Rock with his '52 2-door along with me in my Aero, Bob Metzel in his '47 Kaiser, John & June Parker in their '48 Brown Flash, Tom & Leona Hoffman in their '49 Academy Blue and the McManama family in their '53 Traveler all caravanned from SoCal to Ouray in 1985 for the National Meet. Quite a trip and quite a sight for hundreds of miles: 6 Kaisers and an Aero.

Ooops, should've previewed before I posted. I had meant to say that I thought Rock Brandt bought Phil's Onyx out of the estate after Phil died.

I will check with Steve Hermesch to see if He remembers Who has the Onyx Dragon Now!!!
Just need to keep up with all the Rare K.F.O.C. Product & hope New Owners want to Join the Club if not Already...

Gerald:
A Studebaker guy named John Brooks who lived in Mineral Wells had an Onyx Dragon. At one time it was at his shop on US 180 and that is where I saw it driving by. I talked to him at a regional Studebaker meet and when he told me he had a Dragon, I made the connection. I recall that he claimed the car came from the estate of a K-F guy who lived in Ft Worth.

Correction: Weatherford TX on US 180, not Mineral Wells
