Not really technically related, but my 51' is coming together.  The big debate is whether or not to drive up to Logan tomorrow.  The trip is 51 miles on mostly 2 lane with a stretch through the mountains at 65 (not that I would even try to maintain those speeds), it's a risky maneuver that could pay off.  Anywho, for your looking ball pleasure:

I need to get rid of those dumpy looking tires, but I think a back seat is in order first.

New return springs and cylinder cleaning fixed mine just fine.

Joe, I'm not sure if you have yours fixed, but I am pretty sure my brakes caused my headache, both being out of adjustment and a weak return spring, the right side took almost no pressure to brake so all of the pressure would hit the left at once and the spring wasn't strong enough to fight it, that combined with a bad bleed.  The funny thing is I drove mine all day Sunday and Tuesday when I left for work it did it, didn't touch anything in between.

Hmm, having the same exact problem myself, no warning, just locks the left rear wheel.  I'm stumped.  It only happens going forward and as soon as I tap the brakes it locks right up.  If I go in revers a foot or two it releases and I can go forward until I hit the brake again.  Weak spring maybe?

Well that was an adventure, but I think it was worth it.  It came down about 2" and it makes a gigantic difference.  Also my brakes work quite a bit better so bonus.  The rear tires are somewhat of a PITA now though, nothing a boot doesn't fix.

It looks like everything is right, Raybestos P/N's WK108 and 106.  Cylinders and plungers are getting shined up right now, hope be able to stop the car by the end of tonight.

I ordered the rebuild kits from Rock Auto and they were $2 for the front and $5 for the rear, can't hardly go wrong with that.  I've ordered a lot of stuff from them and it has always been great, shipping usually equals local tax so in the end I'm still under, just might to wait a couple of days for delivery

WOW THAT MADE A BIG BANG!  I borrowed a FWD axle puller from the Autozone and popped them right off.  Has anyone ordered Kaiser parts from Rock Auto?  They have a decent selection listed and they are pretty cost effective.  Think I'll give em a whirl.

That's just spectacular.  This adventure should be good fun.  I have a rear cylinder leaking so it's not really optional to let it ride, the fronts I just wanted to take off and check the condition of everything.  I'll give myself a week to figure this out and then...

Is there any secret to getting the brake drums off?  Or am I just not hitting it hard enough?

Rodger that Fid, any idea how it is removed?  I got the taper pin out, but after that....  I am in way deeper on this than I wanted to be, had to cut the shocks out, they were trashed anyways, I think in the 12 years I have been putzing with cars I might have removed one shock the "right" way.  Thanks for the help as always.

So I guess there are greasable joints in car chassis, who knew....

Anyways I'm guessing that's the "kingpin" and Rudy Phillips should have some

One more question while I am thinking about it.  What is the best way to lower a Kaiser?  I am talking 2", not frame on the ground low.  I just realized today that it has more ground clearance than a lot of trucks and it kind of looks goofy because of that.  It would really help the overall appeal and bring people around to it, the car is however a pretty big chick magnet ;)

Kaiser Forum / Knock knock
« on: May 06, 2011, 11:42:43 PM »
So I have started to drive my 51 more now that the weather is turning and this is probably the most use this car has seen in 20+ years so I am really paranoid about everything and just waiting to burst into a really cool looking ball of fire.  Anyhow, there is a knock of sorts, but it is unlike any knock I have heard before, it only comes out at higher RPMs and load when the engine is warmer, i.e. going up a hill, 50 mph.  If I stop and rev the engine while parked, nothing.  So I guess where I am going with this, is this something that is normal for a Kaiser, or should I be looking into buying some rod bearings?  Possibly detonation?  I really don't feel like blowing a hole in something that can't be replaced.

Wrong mountains, live in Layton.  Hopefully I will bring it up for the cruise-in if it isn't sold by then.  I wouldn't want to steal your thunder for being the only Kaiser there. ;)
