That is a gorgeous car, and exactly the model of 1951 Kaiser, Deluxe Traveler that I always wanted to have--that and a 1951 Frazer Vagabond in that lovely metallic green.

That is likely the body number, (1099) not the serial number. If so, its not on the registry.

Given its first and current location, one would think this would be Long Beach or Portland production, but if it is the body number 1099, odds are it was built in Willow Run, I betcha.

I also hope that the head and the block are flat and matching each other! I know, it should be the last thing one would expect NOT to be done properly when having a rebuild, but nevertheless...   I think it is likely a mix of improper sequence and torque, with the followup torquing overlooked.

Barbara, award fully deserved as always. Oddly enough, I guess I subscribe to "la creme de la creme"  in having both the Bulletin and the local SDC chapter (ACC) Stude News coming my way electronically now....both award winners, and deservedly so

Ah...I had forgotten about the late 51 Dragons. I have seen several of the early 51 Dragons with different two tone paint schemes, and each time they looked somehow like a car that should have had a vinyl roof but somehow didn't. Hard to explain, I know, but they just seemed different somehow from the regular two-tone cars. seemed a slight letdown.

Now I'm intrigued about "non-metal toppings" for the Kaiser-Frazer cars.

I had the idea that
1) All 53 Kaiser Dragons came with a vinyl roof, even if they were not a two-tone.
2) All 1949-(50) Kaiser Virginian hardtops came with a roof topping. Was is vinyl or muslin/poplin fabric?
3) All 51 Frazers including the hardtops came WITHOUT a roof topping.
4) All 51 Kaiser (Manhattan) Dragons came WITHOUT a roof topping

Other than that in 1 or 2, no metal roofed KF cars before 1954 had a vinyl or fabric covering as a regular factory feature...

Am I right?

I've never myself actually seen the plated metal ones in 49-50 KF products as KWZ states, but I will take everyone's word for it that they do exist, and likely, were a sensible replace for the plastic at the time. My 49 Kaiser has the plastic ones, and I have always wondered what I would do if the plastic failed due to age...

This is getting VERY strange! If this was anyone other than Mr F or Capt Frazer, I'd say they were mistaken.

The Ebay car is listed as VIN:    F485018603

Mr Oleson's car is listed on the on-line registry as a regular Frazer, NOT a Manhattan ie #29  F485-018603   16566        101 602             81  512   Oleson      MO

So, this appears to be Mr Oleson's car and a standard Frazer.

Did he have another near identical 48? It could be, as I have two near identical (one 3 sp overdrive, one automatic) 1957 Studebaker Champion 4 dr sedans in Turquoise/Glendale Green, with exactly the same option list

The rear window wiper was a KF accessory over several years. I haven't heard of any first series cars with them, but I have heard of several 51 through 54. Dave Hollens had/has a 54 Manhattan with one.

This is the sort of thing that should/could be 'saved' by the club as a file (with pictures/diagrams?) in much the way that the Service Standards books have just been done.

The Studebaker site has a wealth of all sorts of 'how-to' items, from pictures of actual accessories (so you can identify things that come up on Ebay or at a flea market) to links to proven modern replacements/formulae in new paint types (Aloha Green, and Caribbean Coral are two that come to my mind that need this) and technical upgrades, templates to affix trim and options, and so forth that are all linked to the SDC main page. Many of these have been collected from actual work done by individual member of the Studebaker Club and shared with the hobby.

Just a thought.
