General Discussion / Re: Info on car wanted
« on: March 25, 2024, 06:45:06 AM »
The car was custom built by a KF club member to resemble a club coupe. If you look closely, you'll see that the space between the trunk lid and rear glass is wider than the two door sedan and that there is no vent window in the rear side glass like that in a two door sedan. Both are hallmarks of the club coupe. The serial number falls into the four door sedan range but without a picture of the trim tag, it's just a guess. Nicely done build, and strong money at the sale, but the old timers in the club will dismiss it as "another one chopped up".

In the event you have no luck with Rudy - he can be hard to reach - you might find something here that would be close to correct - https://www.restorationspecialties.com/PDF-Catalog_ep_43.html

The Simple Machines platform this forum runs on is over ten years old and is running out of allotted space. There is some behind the scenes work happening to try to capture some of the data so it's not lost, as well as to update the supporting code. Meanwhile, hiccups like this might occur.

General Discussion / Re: Darrin Door - stuck open, cannot close
« on: March 11, 2024, 08:26:50 AM »
Do you use Facebook? There are two Darrin related pages with much more activity than here where you might find someone with a lead on new door track. Yours appears pretty corroded but you could try flipping the track over...the top now becomes the bottom. If the track groove itself is clean, it'll do the job.

Another thought came to mind. Try removing the cover at the door latch - there might be enough space to get a long probe, tall paint stir stick or dowel rod inside the door to trip the stuck detent stop. There's a lot of moving parts between the rear and front of the door to work around but it's worth a shot.

The upper rail bolts are visible in the engine compartment. They sit high up near the firewall

When the door is opened, a mechanical action causes the door to move away from the inside of the fender so it doesn't rub against it. Once the door is all of the way open, that action completes by dropping the mechanism into a detent so the door stays open. My guess is that something in the mechanism shifted and will not allow the handle, when moved, to release the door from its stop and allow it to slide closed. Since accessing the door guts isn't possible with the door fully open, you might have to remove it with the upper and lower rails to fix the problem

The other items do not fit a Darrin

It's almost a press fit so separating the two is difficult. I ended up wedging the pedal to the floor so the nut was away from the body and used some heat to break the bond.

Kaiser Forum / Re: running an electric fuel pump
« on: February 08, 2024, 07:35:08 AM »
Running the electric pump will help to prevent vapor lock. I only run mine in my Darrin when I'm on sustained long runs at higher speeds but I know there are those who run theirs full time.

Kaiser Forum / Re: need radio antenna
« on: January 31, 2024, 07:27:59 AM »
A vacuum operated antenna was available as a factory accessory item for the 1949-50 cars but I'm not aware of it being available for the 51-55 Kaisers. They are very rare and expensive when they do appear for sale. KF never offered an electrically operated antenna, although I'm sure someone's figured out how to retrofit a modern unit.

If you decide to use a manual unit, 1957-59 Chevy truck antennas are a very close match to the KF unit

Darrin Forum / Re: Trunk Latch Removal
« on: January 19, 2024, 07:03:34 AM »
There's a spring loaded retainer that's holding the latch mechanism and bezel  in place. Look closely at the third photo and you'll see a flat piece of metal sitting against the trunk lid. That flat piece has a tab facing you (the end has a 90 degree bend). Pull the tab towards you and it will release the latch and bezel. Reassembly is the reverse.

General Discussion / Re: Dash knob removal on Darrin
« on: January 16, 2024, 08:28:33 AM »
To properly remove the knob, a stiff paper clip, small flat blade screwdriver or stiff piece of wire is needed. The inside of the knob has a tab with a hole in it for the switch shaft to slide thru. The tab places tension on the shaft and the tension is what holds the knob in place. To remove the knob, insert the tool and try to place it behind the tab - it's sitting at roughly a 45 degree angle against the shaft with the lower half of the tab facing towards the dash. While gently tugging on the knob, pull forward on the tab which will release the tension and allow the knob to slide off. It is not easy and will take plenty of patience!

When reinstalling the knob, be careful not to push it on the shaft too far or it will bottom on the shaft and put a dimple on the center of the knob. Don't ask me how I know...

General Discussion / Re: bmper guard bolts

KF borrowed from other manufacturers for many of their parts. In this case, Mopar was the choice for some of the trim fasteners. Try these folks for the bolts -

Here's a breakdown of the trim tag
Model 524 - 1952 Henry J Corsair DeLuxe
Body 4 - Two door sedan
Paint 325 - Cape Verde Green Metallic
Trim 4481 - McDonnell Plaid
IP 16 - Interior Paint
TR 2 - Three speed transmission
AG 9 - Accessory group
SCHED 14 - Scheduled for assembly on the 14th day of Henry J production
ITEM NO 140 - 140th vehicle assembled in the above schedule

My guess - the car was built as a 52 and at some point someone swapped in 51 parts...the front sheet metal and rear quarters. Easy enough to do, it's all bolt on.
