Throw away vs cartridge oil filter on a 51
« on: March 21, 2020, 12:50:09 AM »
At this point, I'm not sure which my 51 has.  Weather is still a bit rough up here, so I still have the car under wraps until things warm up a bit, but based on the picture below (from Country Classics where I bought the car) and a current auction of one of the throw away interchange filters (a Fram PB 1/2P) it appears to be of the throw away variety.  Am I correct in that assessment?

Many thanks!

Crap...I was afraid of that.

Guess I'll be talking to the Larry's tomorrow about ordering one of the cartridge canister variety.  :)

Is there a currently manufactured cartridge filter replacement for these cars?  Per the KFOCI Handbook, they all appear to be NOS stock numbers...

You can use just about any year K-F replacement element filter off a parts car that can be cleaned up (sandpaper off the old paint) and re-painted.  the lines into the block were never changed and the filter element is the P70-FF which Chrysler Corporation used on many of its 6 cylinder engines during the late 1940's.  You can get the original set of Purolator decals from the Manufacturing Fund and off you go.  Type 1/2 filters haven't been made for decades & the switch on 1951-55 Kaisers is noted in the parts books and the memo sent out in May 1950 to dealers that you find in KFOCI HANDBOOK on CD.

Check with Dale or Steve Hammon down in Beloit and see what they have on hand.

Here's a picture of a Purolator filter on my 53K. They're relatively easy to locate as they are the same as used in most 48-53 Chrysler/Plymouth/Dodge passenger cars. I use a NAPA 1080 filter.

Joe, there may be an issue with your website.  My Avast anti-virus warns me the URL is blacklisted due to some sort of malicious exploit that exists on it.

I have an NOS can coming from Larry Smith, and I bought two 4 pack lots of NOS Fram C233PL filter cartridges for about $11.90 each...

I should be good for about the next 8 years...should I live so long.  :D

Be careful that the canister Larry is sending is not one to fit a Henry J. They differ and won't fit the big Kaisers without modification. The Henry J Purolator unit is easily identify by its ribbed top. The unit most commonly used on the big Kaisers does not have the ribbed top.

Here's a picture of the Henry J unit. Note the mount - it differs from what your car would use.

Ack...he said it was a Henry J one, but that they were the same for the other Kaisers...

What sort of modifications are required to make them fit?

If the unit has an adjustable collar on it then it will work. Ive seen two versions of the Henry J canister and the adjustable version is more common.

Attached a is picture of the adjustable version. It has elongated slots to fit different stud spacing.

Ah...so if it's the adjustable version I'm good, though points may be deducted in judging...

I can accept that, particularly since I'm more interested in driving this car to fests, art shows, etc. in the area, than I am in having it judged.

That's inferring of course that there will be any fests, art shows, etc. to drive to this summer.  :)

If it is the purolator type of replacement element canister as used on prior to 1951 year Kaisers and all Frazers, there should be no probnlem on judging, especially on a 1951 Kaiser.  You can print off the memo from KFOCI HANDBOOK on CD if you want documentation on this.  It wzs accepted by the Chief Judge as no-point deduction for 1951-55 Kaisers prior to 2012.  Therefore, it should be accepted today.
