If you're referring to slats like those in the utility cars (Travelers or Vagabonds), no there are none in the Manhattans. There are some strengthening ribs in the sheet metal, one on each side near the outer edge of the trunk, but they were stamped as part of the trunk floor.

My 1953 Manhattan had a loosely woven jute or twisted paper material, that was essentially beige with a few red flecks in it. My restoration of the 54 is as follows: https://picasaweb.google.com/109133693071173361394/Kaiser  I used a gray unwoven carpet material.

In a 53 K Manhattan, what does the spare tire hold down assembly consist of?  I appear to be missing a bolt and bracket maybe, that fit into the threaded rod that extends thru the spare up to the hole in the round cover that forms part of the trunk floor.  And how is the jack tied down?  Anyone have any pictures they could post?
