51-55 outside door handles
« on: November 01, 2014, 01:21:44 PM »
51-55 door handles--anyone ever tried to weld up the holes in the handle part and the base part and then redrill to take the slop out of the operation of opening the door. On mine the pin that holds the handle and the base together is fair as to condition its the holes that are in varying degrees of wear that are making the handle operation sloppy. Looks as if the holes were redone by welding and redrilling or true the hole and put a bushing in them to tighten the working of the handle--something?? Just looking for ideas if there are any that might have been tried and really work??  Thks!

I believe that there should be a good supply of good used door handles available.
I believe I have some myself. I think rebuilding them would be more trouble than locating some good used ones.

normally the rear handles are in very good shape , the driver door worst one, so ask for rears, there are lots.. also many door handles have a small hole in on the handle that will accept a small nylon pin to hold the handle away from the body. These pins are available at most ACE HARDWARE STORES in the nut and bolt section

Pencil Erasers fit between the end of the handle and the body.  Office supply stores have Eraser refills for mechanical erasers, and you can trim it to fit in the holes.

My problem is the pins and the holes drilled in the handle and base. The pins are worn and the holes are worn and the handle flops around. found some rubber buffers to go on the base to keep the handle from hitting the door skin but the slop in the handle is the problem.

I looked at a spare handle last night. Would it be easier to drill the holes slightly larger and use an oversize pin?

To true mine up I think I will be too close to the edge and they want hold up. Pins might be a challenge too.
