Spring in oil filter canister

I just changed the oil and filter in the 54 Kaiser and there is a spring in the canister. Does anyone know if that spring goes at the top or the bottom of the filter. It was at the bottom when I took it off, but I think it might go on top between the filter and the lid. It had a WIX 51100 cartridge, but the outside was painted all black, so I have no # to go by.

The spring goes on top of the filter with the wide part of the spring sitting on the filter. On mine the spring stays with the
lid when the lid is removed clinging to the bolt in the lid.
