I understand the issue with wanting a filter as early in the system as possible and I had planned an inline filter between the tank and pump but I was trying to make the restoration as close to original as possible. Plus the hardlines I have are built for the filter at the carburetor. I can bend up a new fuel line if that is the best thing to do.
I am sensitive to fuel leaks near the carburetor, I am in the middle of a complete restoration of my 59 Ford Retractable Hardtop due to an engine fire caused by a stuck float in my carburetor which flooded the top of the intake manifold then a backfire ignited it.   

I will check Walcks for the wire separators. Thanks

Mine is one of the later Darrins, so that may explain its location at the pump. Omg! A ‘59 retractable😎 I absolutely miss my ‘59 convert!

Rather than bend another line you might find a section to cut out & re-flare where this filter will fit. I do not believe that Darrins came equipped with a glass bowl filter at the carburetor. I paged thru the factory and restored car photos I have and didn't see any with an external filter mounted at the carb.

I have installed these inline filters;
on my Darrin, under the battery box;  on the HJ further back in an appropriate straight section.

no need to flare; clear so you can see what's going one, and easy to replace element, or merely tap it clean.
you would be surprised how much sand you get.

I imagine it’s not much different than a glass bowl fuel pump. No potential leaking on the engine, so I’ll keep it that way. Not difficult at all to get at to change out the filter either:-)

That second photo shows why you need one. Any old car owner who says my tank is not rusty is like saying "  My dog did not do that or my kid don't …".
Keep in mind that the lines are steel and you need to protect the intake valve on the fuel pump (metal cased filter). Might just be me but the intake valve on the pump and the float level valve on the carb have been the main sources of problems for me over the years.

Here's a shot of the one in the link above with adapter fittings for 1/4 in. line. Probably 6 to 6 1/2 inches long including fittings.
