Oil filter question again: NAPA 1010 or 1080?

This question seems to come up every time I change oil: which NAPA filter, 1080 or 1010?  Both seem to fit, though 1080 is the larger size and fills more of the oil filter canister.  I pulled out a 1010, but I'm not sure it is correct.  Help!

Les, if 1080 is the larger filter, why is the box on the top beside the 1010 filter to its left?  Is this an optical dillusion or are you just testing us.  Les, what happenned to your Human Factors training?  Have you forgotten it already?

 ;D  The boxes are the same size!  I slept through Human Factors class, I guess!  I went with the 1080, the smaller of the two, because it's the same as the old one, and if it ain't broke, don't fix it, right? The gasket for the filter housing lid was smaller for the 1010 filter and wouldn't work on my set up anyway. So what have I learned?  WRITE THE NUMBERS DOWN FOR THE PARTS YOU USED SO NEXT TIME YOU DON'T HAVE TO GUESS.   ::)

The correct NAPA number should match to AC-PF316;  This is the original AC replacement filter to match the P70-FF.  My AC filter book shows that the NAPA 1010 is same as the AC P-203 which is same as a Fram C-3 which was a filter that was found in the dealer-install Oil filter Kit (reference K-F letter to dealers in May 1950), while the 1080 ties back to the P301, which is 4/32 of an inch higher, but same diameter as the AC 316.   In 1989, the date in my AC book, the correct replacement for the AC Pf316 was the 1070.

My internet searching could not turn up NAPA 1070 filters.  1010 and 1080 are listed, though.  I'm assuming you didn't mean AC Delco PF316 as the only filter I found by that number is a spin-on modern type.  Using your information, Jack, NAPA 1010 should be the filter to use in my application then.  So these were dealer installed filter setups, is that right?  Thanks for your patience with this, I'm sure it has been asked and answered a million times before.
One more thing, should the filter canister be filled with oil before placing the lid back on?

KF oil filters are partial flow units...meaning that not all of the oil circulated thru the engine is filtered all of the time. So, it is not critical to have the filter filled with oil when changing the filter. I do, however, fill mine when I do change it and it's probably not a bad idea to do it anyway!

I said AC, as in AC, NOT AC DELCO.  The book I am using is 42A-100 1989 edition, one of the last before all the re-numbering of the filters took place.

Also, check your shop manuals....K-F oil filters are FULL FLOW types, which is why the FF designation is on the P-70.  This is also lsited in the 1955 Fram Oil Filter changing information which still included information on the 1/2 canisters.

I realize that a lot of the older filter types have gone out of production due to lack of demand and it will only get worse as time goes on.

I was surprised to find out that the FoMoCo filters going on the engines built at the engine line I cover as a Resident Engineer are actually made by Champion.

Did we ever determine wheter the 1080 or the 1010 was the correct filter /  As Les states, the 1010 is a pretty tight fit...is that OK?  I, too, put a 1080 in last time but its oil change time, and I'm.... ???

A number of the older type filters are no longer in production (type 1/2 ceased production as far as I know in the 1980's).  Filter companies have tried to "consolidate" the usage to what remains.  Size on the "recommended" type may have changed as a result.  If the CURRENT NAPA BOOK says that a 1010 is the replacement for a P-70FF or Kaiser Jeep/Willys  P/N 706562 than that is the closest they are currently coming to the dimensions of the P70-FF. 

NOTE THAT I MODIFIED THIS AFTER FINDING MY 1967 ISSUE KAISER-JEEP POPULAR PARTS LIST BOOK.  In 1967, the Kaiser-Jeep numbers were 909335 if you are replacing a Fram C-3 filter element or 911208 if it is the P70-FF and (if I read the book right) 936407 for the throw away (type 1/2)? Filter.  I am not sure on the 1/2 as the number is also listed for the 4 cylinder F-head engine and I never knew they were used with that motor.

Note that 1951-55 model year Kaisers were equipped with the type 1/2 sealed canister filter.  Barbara ran a page from the FRAM installation manual showing the 1/2 and how to replace one in The October 2010 Monthly Bulletin as a page filler.  Kaiser-Frazer and Kaiser-Willys dealers were encouraged by the factory to replace the type 1/2 with a regular canister type filter and had a part number for the kit, again using the P70-FF.  However, some dealers (those committed to Fram for their aftermarket brand on other makes/types) used a Fram kit that uses a different size filter.   If I am right, that filter is a C-3 as used on some Studebaker models.  If any of your Stude's have that type, check size and see how it stacks up with the NAPA types.

I thought that various 1950's Studebaker models used the Fram type oil filter unit with a C-3 replacement element.  At least, that is what the Fram book indicates.  It may be that their reference is to an aftermarket type that gas stations installed?
