Fuel gauge sending unit ohms

I have have a 1951 Henry J and the fuel gauge sending unit needs repaired or replaced. I've checked the ohm reading as best I can and it looks like 10 ohms full and 70 ohms empty with a 4 inch drop. If any one can help with info for repair or an after market replacement me and three other Henry J owners would be thankfull. Thanks for your help. Don

I have a NOS one and I will check it. If memory serves me right I think the Sending unit is closer to 100 ohms max. I will post readings as soon as I can.

You know, John Parker used to buy sending units for Model A Fords and adjust the length of the float lever for use as Kaiser & HJ sending units.

Just checked mine (old but working) and it is also 70 ohms.  More wouldn't hurt, would just get to empty on scale a little early...

Have you removed it and looked at it yet? Often times the only thing wrong is the float gets hairline cracks in it and fills will gasoline and sinks to the bottom. I had that happen twice. You could shake the float and hear the gas inside it. I found the crack, pushed it open with a screwdriver and dumped the gas out. Then let it dry and used a solder iron (no flame!) to seal it back up. Works great now.

I took my Fluke VOM meter and checked my NOS Henry J fuel gauge sending unit and it is 36 - 100 ohms.

It is a KS-45567 KF-209683 King-Seeley Corp Unit.

When I had my old fuel gauge sending unit the guy told me that it was a 100 ohm unit. He said it is not the most standard ohm value for a fuel gauge sending unit. He did say it is one of better style units of the time.

OK, so i carried my good meter down to the workshop and did the same - i know this is the original sending unit as the car was purchased new by Tom's uncle and then from him by Tom back in the late 50's.  We were the first to tear it apart.  '51 4 cylinder overdrive with trunk lid but no glove box.

Unit measures 14 ohms to 72 ohms.  Full resistor strip inside (gently lifted the pick up brush) measures 75 ohms.

Not sure why the difference, have not tried hooking it to the gas gauge to see where it hits full and empty.

I just tested the one that is installed in my tank. I did it still installed in the gas tank. This is the one that was in my car when I purchased it. It measures 73 ohm. Now I am thinking the one 'advertised' as NOS Henry J that I have as a backup is a suitable replacement.

I'm surprised.  I thought I'd heard at one time that they were 100 ohm units.  I just measured my NOS unit (still in the KF box) and the findings are consistent with what others have found.  See for yourself -
  with the sensor simulating empty  and
  with sensor simulating a full tank.
Looks like they are a 75 ohm unit.  Perhaps it was all the other gauges that were 100 ohm and the HJ sendor being 75.
