51 HJ wiper motor
« on: April 27, 2014, 09:15:49 AM »
Does anyone have any ideas how to get my wipers working better?
I am planning on trying to make it from southern California to the National Convention in Puyallup Washington with My 51 Henry J. I have taken the pivot assemblies and linkage apart and gotten them freed up. I think the problem must be in the vacuum wiper motor. It seems to stick where it starts to return.

I found a place on the net  http://www.wiperman.com/  that says they rebuild them for $99.00 + $8.00 shipping. I haven't called them yet, but will Monday.

Any ideas (other than RainX) would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Mike

Open up the motor and clean the old lube out of it . Make sure the flapper is not shriveled up so it doesn't touch the bottom and sides If it is , soak in oil , if leather , until it expands . Re- lube with petroleum jelly or light grease . Exercise it manually and give it a try . I don't know if this is the proper way to do it , but it works for me .

No luck for me on opening up the wiper motor. The gasket disintegrated when I pulled the top off. No way for me to figure out exactly how the gasket was made. I also couldn't find the right thickness gasket material locally.
The motor was full of old goopy junk. If the gasket had stayed intact I would have probably been OK.

All comments were much appreciated!

I guess I'll call the place in New York that rebuilds them tomorrow.

Wish me luck!

Thanks Dave! ;) I plan on using RainX in any event.
I called the guy in New York this morning and he assures me he will have my wiper motor ready in plenty of time.
I just kind of want to watch the wipers flop around like a real old timer, just like me!!  :)

Thanks to all as well!

If you can get the PNW guys to promise no rain during the National, then you won't need any of it.   They may have ordered rain though to get everyone into the Hospitality Room to view the neat stuff.  :)

We have put our order in for 6 days of sunshine but to cover our bets we have also ordered Convention Umbrellas.
 ;D
Ordering an umbrella will almost always insure it will be sunny!

Pretty tacky to see a KF product going down the road with the driver holding a umbrella out the window, even if it has KF logo on it.
