Fuel pump for 4 cyl

Hi: I'm a new guy, a week ago I bought a 53 Henry J, 4 cylinder. the fuel pump glass bowl has a lot of sediment, car runs but seems to run rougher than I think it should. Was thinking of rebuilding the carb, replacing the fuel pump and setting up a temporary gas tank as what's there is looking rough (probably where the sediment came from). I wanted to ask what would work as a fuel pump, currently it seems to have a dual action pump as it has the vacuum hookups but these are disconnected, looks as if they plumbed the wipers from a vacuum source on the intake. Yes I have a lot of things to go through on the car, just wanted to know if I could use a single action pump and along with that will the Willys pumps work on the Kaiser? Since the Kaiser and Willys engines are the same (Willys was the supplier), you can use a single action Willys pump on your HJ. The connections may not line up but it will work. On some cars, there's an adapter plate that mounts between the pump and block, make sure to reuse it. This acts to reduce pump pressure so the carb won't flood.

I don't recall the number on the dual action pump but I think it's still available at NAPA. You can also get a lot of Henry J parts on the Walck's 4 Wheel Drive site - http://walcks4wd.com/

As Joe points out, there is usually a spacer between the pump and the block on the four cylinder cars.
I think we talked about your car on this forum when it was for sale.  I think the seller had it listed as a '51 and the pictures indicated it was a '53.  Congrats on getting the car and of course, we'll all help with anything you need to get it in top form.
You are correct that most of the "sediment"  you are finding in the pump and carb are likely coming from the gas tank. I learned that lesson on my '52 J back in '01 when I got it.  I kept cleaning that pump and cleaning the carb on almost a daily basis! I removed the gas tank and it was a mountain of gunk/corrosion. I cleaned and sealed the tank and that was the end of it.

The way to go is the single action pump with the metal spacer. Without the spacer ,the fuel pressure will be high and the carb. may flood (been there). The dual action route can be complicated. All the dual pumps are not the same configuration. the domes on the fuel pump end can vary. Some of the are steep and will not have adequate clearance on the HJ. The flat ones will. You can rotate the pump housings to put the outlets where you want them, but you must not rotate the diaphragms. Hold them in place.
In any case install a see through filter before the pump. A brand new pump quickly bites the dust when just a little tank sediment reaches the valves. I also put another filter at the outlet of the tank. They are cheap and good insurance. Over the years, the number one reason I have made "side of the road repairs" has been sediment. If you assume your tank needs cleaning and coating and go ahead and do it, you will be blessed. Current production OMIX pumps advertise that they are alcohol resistant.

The car parts stores have made up metal fuel lines in several lengths. Run a mock fuel line with coat hanger wire and take it to the parts store to help you decide. Some of them will lend you a tubing bender.

I created another post for this earlier but this engine is out of a '53 Henry J. The way to tell is it has a Delco starter (as did the late '52s) and it has the Detroit type coupler on the transmission which only '53 non-overdrive cars had.

When going with the single action pump, you really don't lose anything as far as wipers go. They never worked well in the first place and if you put Rain-X on your windows you don't even need wipers.

Mike, because they used the same engine as many of the Jeeps, the four cylinder Js are very easy to keep running. Yours being a '53 means it has Delco Remy ignition components which were used on most GM cars of the era and parts are readily available.
