Brake shoes
« on: April 13, 2017, 01:06:40 AM »
My 1952 Henry J had the right front inner seal go bad, which got grease in the brakes, causing it to pull hard to the left.  Grease contaminated the front brake shoes.  It needs new front brake shoes.  Local Napa is unable to locate any, and Centric has none in stock.

Has anyone used the ones listed on Ebay?

Those shoes are not the correct size for the Henry J.  I do have the correct Henry J shoes available, contact me if you are interested.

Yea, it is 8 bucks for EACH shoe, not a pair.  Still a heck of a deal for good old leaded primerd steel and Asbestos linings.

The shoes on my car look different.  the front shoe lining is actually shorter on the front forward shoes whereas the linings are all the way on the rear facing.

Here is a photo of my right front, the lining is shorter on right side, the ones shown have lining like the one on left, will those work?

Brake Shoes: The shoe number is 51 and used on all Henry J’s.  Henry Js originally came with the forrward (or primary) shoe covered with a chamfered 10” x 2” lining, while the trailing (or secondary) shoe was covered with a 7 7/8”  x 1 ¾” lining, also with chamfered ends.  The reasoning behind this is that in stopping, the weight transfers forward and the primary shoe does more work.  A lot of the relined shoes have the full shoe surface covered on all shoes.  If your set has the size difference, place the lesser lined shoe to the rear.

Your shoes are installed reverse.  Long goes to front, short to rear.

No wonder car stops better in reverse :)

Does it matter if both shoes match as for this military surplus is selling at $8 a shoe?
