2011 San Diego KF convention

What will it take to make the San Diego KF convention in 2011 the best ever?  Can we get 200 cars there?
San Diego is a beautiful city with alot to do.
Larry Barker and the western group is trying to put on a great convention lets back them up.
I will be bringing 2 cars who else will be bringing their cars ?:D :D :D :D Make this a vacation and bring your cars. Trailer if you have to but lets break all convention records. Bring any KF car: done, almost done, just getting started, THE GOOD, THE BAD and THE UGLY we want them all. You can get parts, information and advice from people who really know KF cars.

I'm planning on coming with my wife from NC...making it our vacation.  I hope the Western region is pulling together and giving Larry the support (and action) he needs to make his dreams a reality.  Larry's a friend of mine and I've spoken with him several times about the convention...he has a lot of plans and dreams to make this an unbelieveable and very memorable event.  Heck, getting 100 cars there would be monumental.  Lets get behind this is any way possible. :D

At this point I do not know if Barbara and I will make it.  Because of distance and HEAT we would not drive, we would have to fly from Cleveland.

Unless you can scrounge up 180 or more cars fron the West Coast for this, I don't think you will make your 200 figure.

I'm trying to get my '51 Frazer Vagabond finished, or at least complete enough to bring along from AZ.

Do you remember the KF National at the Queen Mary? Rick Kamen kept talking about members who lived 30 minutes to an hour away who not only did not bring a car but did not even make a guest appearance.
You will not get 200 cars and I think you should be very satisfied if you get 80.

There are less than 10 active members in the So Ca region so I do not expect lots of cars from our area but those El Dorado, Pacific Northwest and Desert Region folks are a hardy bunch and I'll bet we will have a good showing from there.  The weather in San Diego is the best in the whole US and there are lots of fun things to do there including a great auto and airplane museum.  I am planning to put on a display of K-F collectibles including buttons, badges, pins, rulers, ash trays, accessory hood ornaments, aftermarket accessories, license frames and toppers, key tags from dealers, early K-F toys, framed old dealer wall posters, magazine ads and articles from the era etc. so there will be a few things to view in the hospitality room.  I can only bring one Kaiser or Frazer so would you rather see an original paint, 35,000 mile '51 Kaiser Dlx. Club Coupe or a Graham Paige Frazer with very nice original upholstery?  The Kaiser was on display on a hoist at the entrance to the Queen Mary meet and hasn't been out since.  I am certainly looking forward to San Diego and I hope you are too.

Barring unforeseen circumstances, I am planning to drive to the Convention via Rte.66, starting in The Windy City.  This will be in my mostly unrestored '51 HJ Deluxe.  I did replace the 161 L-head with a 161 F-head.  90 hp up from 80 hp--that should move me down the road.  My decision has marked the 867 time my wife has called me crazy!

Hi Terry, you are a bold/brave man - good for you!  Regarding bias versus radials, I think it mostly depends on what you want to do with your car.  I like to keep mine as original and authentic as possible so I go with bias on them.  The problem is, they last about 15,000 - 20,000 miles. I only drive my cars in the summer so that's a long time, in fact, the ones I put on my '53 J were put on in 1992 and and have about 18,000 miles on them.  They need to be replaced. The problem is if you go with the 5.90, which the Henry J originally had, you can't get the correct width whitewall and the ones produced and sold by Coker, turn yellow right away anyway.  If you go with a 6.40, which some early '51 Js had, you can get the correct width whitewall and the ones on my '53 J have not yellowed like the 5.90s on my '52 have. Bias ply also squeal loudly when you go around corners on a warm day, or in some cases, just slowing down on a hot day.
Radials definitely give a better ride and  will last longer.  I have a friend here who just installed a set of radials on his '51 J and he loves the difference it's made. The whitewall width is closer to the original too and they really do look good. He said he needed to get a front end alignment once he installed them, but that's typical.
When it comes to collector car tires, radials don't cost that much more than bias if you're going for the original look.

One thing to keep in mind is the spare tire well in the trunk of a Henry J was designed to fit the 5.90 and that's really the only tire that fits it so if you buy 5 radials, the spare may not fit where its supposed to. If your car has stationary rear seat back with a package shelf. then the only tire that fits the well is a 5.90. If it has a folding rear seat which doesn't have a package shelf, a 6.40 will fit the spare well. I'm not sure on the radials. My friend who just got them has a Continental tire kit on his car so it didn't matter.
 
I drove my '53 J from Minneapolis to Auburn, Indiana in 2004 with no problems but my arms were pretty shakey when I got home since I wasn't used to driving it that far and that much in one day (I left Auburn at 7:30a on the last day of the meet and arrived home at 8:45p).
Anyway, a J will get you there - I also drove a different '51 J from Minneapolis to Springfield, IL in 1977 and then came back through Saint Louis, MO and then home. Of course the speed limit at that time was 55 mph so that was no big deal and I was 17 at that time so I really didn't care as much about my personal comfort!  I should add that I made both of those trips, in totally stock Henry Js, and had no problems of any kind.  I won't be driving one to San Diego but I'm confident I could do it if I wanted to.

One way or another my black 49 Frazer Manhattan will be there. This will be her first meet. It still need lots of work but it will be there!

I plan on having two of my Kaisers there. Three if the ranchero gets finished and driveable.

I would REALLY like to attend, but with timing--being RIGHT after the Studebaker International in Springfield MO, the bestest I would be able to do is fly from Springfield to San Diego return for the several days. I will be driving one of my Studebakers--likely the automatic 57 Champion--from PEI to Missouri and back. There is no way I can get from Springfield to San Diego in a day or two. Besides, I rather doubt that I want to cross all that hot territory in a car with only an evaporative cooler between me and melting at that time of year, if the first week of June in Glendale AZ this year was any indication.

Jim B: I would like to reinforce your decision to go to Springfield. I know it to be a good location for a big car meet and there are a few KF members in the area who may be at the Stude meet anyway.

We have not had a very large car turnout in a while, the stude convention does much better.maybe the clubcould partner up with the stude group and have better event. Just a thought?
