Maybe your battery ran down while it was out.  Try charging it and see if that makes a difference.  If the battery is run down sometimes it will have enough juice to turn the starter but not enough to start the engine.

Try this loosen the two bolts that holds it to the bellhousing and then try to move it away from the flywheel then tighten the two bolts and try again,if it wont work try starting it with jumper cables if that works its probly ign.switch or starter relay that let You down.

It sounds to me as though it may be mounted crooked or off center.  You may want to try taking it off and putting it back on carefully and ensuring that is goes in straight and even.
Good luck

Great news
My stepdad took my starter to the local shop for me when he told the kid at the counter 6 volt positive ground the kid looked at him funny then called his dad in the office my stepdad said he took one look at it and got excited asked him what it was out of and he said he would rebuild it personally then carried it off like a newborn baby.
I picked it up yesterday the old man came out and thanked me for having something different to work on he even put a new solenoid on it with the starter button built in like the original. I put it in the car today and it works great started right up.
This is the first time i ran it since i put all new gaskets on the engine and im glad to say i have no oil leaks so far.

I drove it a little today got asked to pull over so some 52 chevy owner could look at it. Just checked for oil leaks isnt it great when you impress yourself i have a spot under it that looks like it dripped 2 drops after sitting for 2 hours i cant even figured out where it came from thats pretty good for a 61 year old car.
Im going to drive it to work all next week only 6 miles from my house then next weekend im already registered for the Primer Nationals ive been to that show the last 3 years and cant wait to have my own car there. Ive only seen one Kaiser there before and it was a 54 2 door chopped shaved with a chevy engine it didnt even look like a Kaiser anymore. Hope you guys are having as much fun as i am.
