early Kaiser hubcap
« on: February 01, 2011, 02:29:32 PM »
Can someone help identify this hubcap? It was marked as early Kaiser. It has a flanged edge unlike the "baby moons" on my '48. Is it marked correctly. Thanks for the help!
I will be listing it on eBay. Anyone needing it?

Is it flatter and would seem to snap into the center of the rim rather than over the center of a rim??

Got a pic of the back? That'll tell me what year it fits.

The 48 caps don't have the small lip at the edge like the cap pictured. That was my first guess until I pulled an NOS 48 cap off the parts shelf. The opening on the back of the cap will tell what year it fits.

It doesn't appear to be a K-F cap.

Thanks for the pictures.  By the construction it appears to be an aftermarket baby moon cap and may fit several makes of cars hot rod style.  The earliest Kaiser or Frazer cap with the lettering fit on knobs that were built into the rim much like the '40-'48 Fords and Mercury's.  The regular '47-48 caps were held on by clips on the wheel.  The early caps are difficult to install without denting them.  They were much like the early Camaro small caps that were almost impossible to install without denting the cap.  They were aluminum.  Another of GM's "Better Ideas".

I have 5 original wheels on my late 47 Frazer Manhattan & they do not have clips they have the nubs with the 2 stripes. The caps mount the same but don't have the flange edge. I am the 2nd owner and know the original owner never changed the wheels! Might be interested in the cap as a close spare.

These were the hub caps first used on Kaiser automobiles during 1946 and early 1947 production.  The lettered caps were dropped in part because of supplier issues; it was decided to go with a more or less generic cap for both Kaiser and Frazer cars so they could multi-source and keep building cars.

This cap is only 6 inches in diameter.  It would not fit on a Kaiser wheel.  Could it have been for a Continental kit or maybe not a hubcap at all?

It looks like it would fit in the centre of a Continental kit in front of a latch or locking mechanism and mimic the 'real' hubcaps. Either that, or the world's largest never actually produced horn button ;D

The clips on that smaller Kaiser cap look like those used on the center caps for wire wheels. I know the 53-up cars with wires used a modified HJ small cap. Perhaps this one's a prototype unit?
