Supercharger info needed
« on: March 21, 2009, 11:04:17 AM »
I need info, suggestions and parts required to install a Paxton Supercharger on a 161 F-head.
I understand that a club member made an air intake duct years ago.  Still around and available??

Thanks much.

The legend of the Paxton superchargers dates back to the inventor Robert Paxton McCulloch. The original McCulloch supercharger began production in 1937 for flat head Ford engines. Over 5,000 units were sold in the late 30s. The early 1940’s shifted production to wartime endeavors and supercharger production was discontinued. The idea for new supercharger capable of quiet operation, low-end boost and self contained lubrication emerged in the late 1940s. In 1953, McCulloch released an all new supercharger to the public.

The new McCulloch supercharger utilized a planetary ball drive that offered a 4.4:1 step up ratio from the input shaft to the impeller. It was lubricated with a mechanical oil pump and a self contained reservoir of transmission fluid. The supercharger offered a maximum of 5 psi and significant bottom end power with the aid of a variable rate input pulley. The V-belt system allowed the pulley diameter to essentially change based on engine RPM and power needs. The McCulloch ball drive supercharger was used on a wide variety of vehicles at the time including the Kaiser Manhattan, the Packard Panther (five show cars built), the Studebaker Golden Hawk, the 1957 Packard Clipper (4,809 produced and rebadged as Studebakers) and the 1958 Packard Hawk (588 produced).

The McCulloch later became Paxton, and was used by Studebaker at the time that Andy Granatelli was president of Paxton. There is a website for paxton. it's www.paxtonauto.com I'm trying to find out if they are offering kits that were made at one time. I heard you do need to get someone who knows these and has rebuilt them before. I know this doesn't answer all your questions, but just a start. I am interested in adding one on my 53 manhattan as well. Well, I'm just thinking about it, I like my cars all original, and that really wasn't until 54 for kaiser. Does anyone know if it was an option for 53?

One of my ford parts books (Mac's I think) I just got had a new superchargers for sale from Paxton. It was like $4,000.00 or so but it was the whole kit "FOR A FORD" but looks like a Kaiser one.

They also had antenna's that go all the way in the fender like my 49 Frazer should have.

I'll try to find the catalog.

Complete 1954 supercharger kits appear in the Bulletin from time to time and sometimes they are on eBay.  They run in the $500.00 range.

You are correct.  Supercharger was only used for '54, not optional for '53.

Thanks to all.
Is the dual belt crank shaft pulley common to any other car?

We had a '53 Manhattan that had a dual pulley on it. I think it's because power steering was an option on it.

The McCulloch supercharger was standard equipment on the 1954 and 1955 Manhattans models only.  Horsepower was bumped up from 118 to 140 with the s/c.  McCulloch (the later "Paxton" also came from Robert Paxton McCulloch's name) sold supercharger add-on kits for a variety of cars while Ford, Studebaker and Kaiser installed them from the factory.  It was a popular and inexpensive way of boosting horsepower and performance.  Go to http://vs57.com/ to learn more about these superchargers.

Studebaker people have done a lot of work on these units so they are the ones to go for for info. Max boost is more like 3.5 PSI or enough to give you a kick, but not really as big a boost as you hoped. Unless your engine came with such a unit (54/55 Manhattan or Stude V8) so that you can get brackets, pulleys, switches, and plumbing and don't have to make them yourself, I would suggest exploring NOS injection.

The Studebaker people tried to duplicate the Andy Granatelli "Duo Cento" Avanti speed runs at Bonneville (196 mph). They were hard pressed to to hit 180 mph the first year and after another year of intense thinking and mechanicaning - focusing on the heads and the superchargers -  they broke 190. So, were they missing something obvious or did Tony have something rigged?  Regardless, they extensively modified the VS57 supercharger unit to get about 5 psi boost and it wasn't enough for their purposes.

Terry, try Bob Adams in Arizona. He has put superchargers on Darrins and sold them at Barrett-Jackson. I do not have his number but he has an on going EBay ad for a Darrin top frame with his contact info.

I think that Paxton Products is still in their same old building on Olympic Blvd and 9th St. in Santa Monica CA.
