Cover for Henry J Continental Kit
« on: August 24, 2009, 03:32:58 PM »
Does anyone have, or know of anyone who has, a pattern for the spare tire cover that was used on the Henry J Continental spare kits?  Also, does anyone know what fabric the covers were made from and which colors were available?  The Henry J parts book does not list colors, only a cover but I've seen at least two which I know were original factory  issue covers and they were definitely white. I've also seen some which are tan (I don't think these were factory issue though) and I've also heard some were other colors as well.  I need to have one made for my car and it would be helpful to have a pattern, or an old cover which I could use for a pattern.  Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I saw one on a car in Kerrville TX on used car lot along with other KF cars. This was in the early 80s I guess and the cover was tan as I recall.

One like this?

I don't know...
Maybe you should just go with one of those ones with Yosemite Sam saying "BACK OFF!"

Yea, I've used that photo as a reference.  That car belongs to Jerry  Johnson from the Chicago area. I asked him about it once and he told me it's a low mileage car  he got from the original owner way back so I'd conclude that tan was available.  I also have a home video of a car my dad bought back in '74. He got it from the original owner and it had been stored in a heated garage since 1958 and had less than 20,000 miles on it. The video reveals the cover is most certainly white and no reason to believe it was not original. Here it is in 1986 just before it was sold
The '52 Vagabond Harlan Phillips now has was for sale on a used car lot in Omaha in the 1970s. It was original then and it had a white cover. I saw that same car in Duluth, MN about 10 years ago and took video of it and the cover appeared to be original and it was white. The thing these two cars with white covers had in common is they were both blue satin in color. Perhaps the color of the car dictated which color the cover was. Currently Dale Hammond has an NOS kit on ebay and the cover is tan and it does not have "Henry J" embroidered on it as most do. It appears KF may have used several styles. I'm going with a white one on my car - no  Yosemite Sam.

HAHA!

We've got to work on your photoshop skills, brother.

The only reference I saw to cover colors was in "Last Onslaught", and it said tan. I think white would be the way to go though. That would look great.

That must be where I saw it too (LOOD) because I thought I remembered reading somewhere they were tan or white. And, I didn't use photoshop, I just blasted that out quickly with MS Paint while I was eating my lunch. They don't let us have "silly" things like PhotoShop on company computers.

I broke down and went with tan since that's what all the literature said they should be. I found an original to compare and got the color pretty close. Here it is:

Lowell, Notice how even though I know your cover is tan it looks white in your picture. I wonder if some of the old black-n-white pictures of CT Covers are truely tan and not white as we usually assume.

P.S. Your Vag looks GREAT!

Thanks, without your original to help, I'm sure it would not look so good. Again, I appreciate it.

Thanks again to AZ_HJ, I was able to get the "Henry J" logo embroidered on it. It's a bit smaller than the logo on the original but it looks great if you ask me. I'm going to take it out and install it on the car tomorrow. I'll just have to wait till next spring when I can drive the car again!

According to the news tag up top, "Time to get your KF ready for the road as Spring has arrived!"

Looks like we skipped winter this year. You can unpack that Henry J now.
