1949 Kaiser Horn
« on: April 03, 2015, 02:03:37 PM »
I got the horn working on my 49 Kaiser. Had to replace the ground wire and horn relay. I used a Standard brand relay #HR106. Keep in mind my car is now a 12 v beg ground car so I had to reverse wires to make the horn blow. Works fine. Boy is it loud.

Yes 12 volts going to a 6 volt horn will create a racket. I used to do this on school buses and mail carriers cars.

So it won't hurt to run 12 volts to the horn....
whatever you do in life, always give 100%.unless your're donating blood.

So are you using a genni or an alternator? (for your 12 volt swap)

Putting 12 volts on the horn likely won't hurt them unless you lean on it for a long time. But for no longer than most horns blow, it shouldn't hurt them. They will be loud!  I know 12 volts across the '47/'48 horns is a wonderful sound.

I used a one wire GM alternator.

I used a one wire GM alternator.

I'm leaning that way, I have to a lot of work already~ Might as well do it..... I have a 12 genni in the shop from one of my 55 Pontiacs  ;)

Some guys don't believe in doing the conversion but I do. Had lots of problems getting s reliable start. Carried a jump box everywhere. Now it starts up easy and I've not hooked a jump box to it or had to hook up a trickle charger or anything. Just a reliable start each and every time. Worked out good for me.

Probably should have done that on mine. It starts instantly  if started within the last two weeks, but go a month and it just doesn't seem to have enough fire in the ignition to get the job done. And that's with a brand new 6v Optima battery and huge, original type battery cables.

I replaced wires, coil, voltage regulator, sent the generator off to be built, used a trickle charger and nothing seemed to make my car reliable.  Converted to 12 volts and have never had to jump it off or plug it in.  It can be a pain to do the conversion but in the end to me it was worth it.
