1948 Kaiser Special
« on: May 04, 2015, 09:13:23 AM »
Hi All,

New forum member. Purchased a 1948 Kaiser Special about a year ago. 34,000 original miles and almost all original. Having some engine work done, new seals, painting the engine compartment and new front end parts.

The guy doing the work for me pulled the head and found massive carbon build up on the valves and one bent valve so, I am having a valve job done, truing the head and block, honing the cylinders and putting new rings and crank bearings. When taking the exhaust manifold off it was found to have multiple cracks. My preference would be to find a replacement, new or used, rather than trying to repair this one. I will then have it ceramic coated black for appearance purposes. Question 1 is any sources you can recommend for an exhaust manifold.

Second item is the temp gauge does not function and the previous owner put an after market, under dash model in. I would like to return it to the original gauge. Looking for a source for this part as well or if anyone knows if the original can be repaired.

Next project will be replacing weather stripping and window rubber but probably not until after the summer show season is over. Thanks in advance for your wisdom and assistance!

What a nice looking car!  All of the parts are available and I would recommend putting a free ad in the KFOCI monthly Bulletin as many of the club members and parts vendors have the parts you need.

The faulty temp gauge is probably due to a bad sending unit that mounts into the driver's side of the cylinder head. Rarely does the dash gauge fail as it's just reading resistance.

You can check kfparts.com. They have quite a selection of new and NOS parts.
