Tet heat glue

I recently changes my spedo in my 55 I currently have an after market heat gage.How does not test the Kaiser heat gage to see it it works if it does then I will purchase a new sender . I think i can find the wire that is connected to the non working gage

There are two ways to check the temp gauge. First find the wire that goes to the send unit, remove the wire and ground it to bare metal. The temp gauge should go to full not. The other is to use a digital multi meter, set the multi meter in the ohm position, put one lead on the temp sending unit where the wire is and the other lead on the engine block. Note the reading. Now start the engine and watch the multi meter the ohm reading should start to go down. If it reaches 0 ohms the engine is way to hot! Good luck.

Thanks for the tip I grounded the wire and got full reading now to find a sending unit I called Rudy got no answer looked on line and found several universal units will they work or do i need a special sender?

I don't know the ohm range of the sending unit. Maybe someone here knows. I'm sure something should be available.

You need a sender calibrated to the electrical characteristics of the indicator light end; otherwise it will either go off even when cold or won't go off even if the radiator's boiling over.

I don't know the ohm range but the factory parts books indicate it's the same sending unit that is used in the Henry J. If so, it's NAPA TS6464 and available for $11.99.  I'm getting one for my '53 J tomorrow.

Thanks for all your  help Rudy finally called back and had one that fits Lowell it was almost three times the NAPA part but he is the expert and assures me that it will work in a 55

I just picked mine up this morning - it's the exact same unit and it fixed my gauge!
I was wrong, it was $11.69 at NAPA, not $11.99 as I quoted.

It sure looks the same both Rudy and Chris indicate their is a difference needed for the 54-55 vs 51-early 54 don't know what it is but didn't want to take the chance so i bit the bullet

Ah... I did not know that. My parts book only goes through '53. If a different gauge was used, a different sending unit may be required. Anyway, if anyone else needs one for a '51-'53, this is it.

The 54-55 unit has a different calibration and if an earlier unit is used, the reading will be incorrect.

When I get the unit i will look at it closely to see if there are any identifying numbers on it for future reference

Got the unit from Rudy no identification  only markings are a 4 and 3 on the nose hope it works and I nevr have to search for a replacement

installed the new sender and it was successful I am truly pleased to get rid of the after market system and now back to Kaiser specs. . This is probably not a big deal to you gear heads but to an 83 year old shade tree mechanic I couldn't be happier thanks to all of you for your help
