Darrin Gas Tank
« on: September 24, 2016, 09:46:05 AM »
Has any Darrin owner found a place to buy a new gas tank? I read on the forum that it is not the same tank as a Henry J. Both of mine are no good, one is rusted on the inside and the other is caked with sludge.

Caked with sludge could possibly be a good thing. Might be worth having a radiator shop boil it out to see what you've got.

You can boil it out yourself with an outdoor fish cooker . Take out the sending unit , put in in plenty of detergent , fill with water and fire up the cooker . Let it come to a boil and watch the junk come out . It may need to boil an hour but will break loose all the old varnish and crud . Let it cool , rinse with a water hose and let it dry . Works great .

Rusted on inside--no big deal....common problem on old tanks--just like mine was.
Have a radiator shop clean it and treat/line it...less than $100.
Add an inline fuel filter before the fuel pump.
Haven't had a problem in 8 years/8'000+ miles.

I've had five tanks repaired by a company called Gas Tank Renu and after 15 years with one tank, I've yet to have a problem. I just had two Henry J tanks as well as the one on my Darrin done by them and have no complaints. The downside is that they are not in every state so you'd have to figure out a way to get the tank to them.
