how do you get the column free from the steering box? Dan #9792

I believe that on the 51-3 cars, the steering shaft (long rod from the box to the steering wheel) is an assembly that is removed from the car with the box attached. You'll then need to disassemble the steering box to get the shaft out. On the 54s, a vibration damper was used in line with the shaft so to remove the box without having to take the rest off the car, one needs to just disassemble the damper.

The shaft with column is removed along with the steering box. Because there is no joint on pre-54 Kaisers, the column on those cars needs to be shimmed when installed to avoid misalignment. You know what happens when the column isn't shimmed properly? After a while and at the most inconvenient times, the shaft breaks off where it enters the steering box.

Thanks for all of your help. Since I don't have anything in the way I will pull the box and shaft. I should know by now that nothing is easy on this rebuild. Dan
