Wanted: Orginal Accelerator spring needed.
« on: May 13, 2010, 12:59:39 PM »
I know it is a little item and most likely not even worth the time for most people to put in an envelope and send it off, but I will ask anyway.

At the 50th National convention I got marked down by the judges because I have the wrong accelerator spring on the engine.

Would anyone be able to supply me with an original (excellent condition) accelerator Spring for my 226 engine in my 53 Kaiser Manhattan?

Thanks,
*EDC*

The spring you have will work..it's probably in the wrong place. Most folks connect them up where the accelerator arm crossed the cylinder head. It's supposed to mount down where the pedal arm comes out of the floor. Another arm that mounts to the bracket that's attched to the firewall has 2 holes on it's lower end. One connects to the previously mentioned arm that sticks out of the floor and the other takes one end of the spring. The other end mounts to a tab on the outside of the floor (bottom of firewall). Since those springs originally took alot of weather, they broke or stretched and so folks mounted a new one up top.
So, relocate your spring and that'll keep the judges happy. By the way, the spring was originally a dark red (I have an NOS one for my 54) and it's that color.

Yes, this one falls in the "been there, done that" category. I replaced one on  a '51 Kaiser a couple of years ago. A #66 from Ace Hardware is a good replacement. I had to cut some off to get the length right but I took pictures. Here they are -
Broken spring in pieces
New spring attached to hole in firewall and throttle linkeage.  Weas, if you read this, it's up to you if you want to paint that spring red.

OH, Thanks a lot!
So no spring(s) (which I have now) should be on the engine.
I need to check and see what is under the car :-\
ON the engine there are several springs, none of the them look orginal or what is in the picture below.

Thanks I will crawl under and see what I find:)

Well, I feel quite silly.
My spring is on the car, in the correct place, and Rust in color.

In fact, I just removed the Springs on the top of the engine and everything seems to work OK.

Not sure why someone put more Springs on the accelerator, I may find out in the future now that they are removed.

Thanks again for the expert Help!

Probably someone put the extra springs on for a reason a long time ago.  Be careful for awhile until you know it is safe.  You do not want to turn your car into an accelerating Toyota!

Hey Lowell, that is a good pic of the spring on the 51-55 throttle linkage under the firewall. If people can orient themselves, they can understand why if the wiring terminals on the OD kickdown switch are positioned wrong, the spring can brush against them and cut off both the engine ignition (refer to the wiring diagram) and OD.
