Henry J headliner
« on: April 15, 2019, 07:39:37 PM »
I'm thinking about getting a new headliner, I helped with one once but never done one myself. I've looked at a UTube video of one being done and noticed that they had the windows and all window seals out. While I can see that this made it easier to stretch the material, they had it clamped to the window edges making it easier to smooth the creases. Is it possible to replace the headliner with windows still in?

Not knowing the assembly details of a J, I can share that the headliner on an Aero glues over the front & rear window opening pinch weld flanges that snaps into the window gasket retaining groove. Sides are fastened in a different manner.

I have the headliner out of my 54 HJ at the moment and looking at the window gaskets and the sheet metal around them, it looks to be much easier to install the headliner with the glass removed. That said, a friend installed one in his 51 with the glass in place. He said it was difficult but I saw the install and it looked good.

I suppose it boils down to experience...and bravery!

I had a headliner installed in my '53 J back in the early 1990s. The guy who did it said he needed to take out the back windshield but the side windows could stay in. Twenty six years later, it still looks great.
