Allstate progress in 2021
« on: December 28, 2021, 08:44:42 PM »
I haven't provided any updates in awhile and there were many improvements made on the Allstate in 2021. In June I took it to the annual "Back To the Fifties Weekend" in St. Paul - a show I highly recommend.  Here it is in line waiting to get in when the gates open at 6a (there were 12,000 cars registered and lines to get in usually extend over a mile. You can see some of it in the rear view pic of the Allstate in line)  I couldn't help but notice the Dodge in front of it is almost the exact same color.  Must've been popular back in the day.

Had the wheel covers made/converted from HJ wheel covers by a metal finishing shop in St. Paul.  They did an amazing job on them.  Not only did they remove the 'K' and replace it with a blank, they straightened and polished them too and they look fantastic!

Also acquired an Allstate and a Henry J heater so I could assemble it as an Allstate heater and install it.  I learned something about these - the Henry J recirculating heater, 100302,  is plumbed differently on the back than most of the Allstate heaters that resemble it (both are based on the Redhead model DL-51).  The Allstate version I bought likely was not intended for use in the Allstate car itself.  The pipes come off the back differently and unless you want to route the hoses through the outside fender well it will not simply install in an Allstate or Henry J!  It doesn't appear that this configuration can easily be changed with a torch and some solder either!  See attached - Allstate one is on the left, HJ on the right. So, what I had to do was take the Allstate face plate off and install it on the Henry J heater unit in order to install it in the car. Having no templates and no instructions didn't help the cause either. Anyway, it's installed and works and looks good.

Whomever painted the car painted everything on the dash including the starter button and OD cable hanger! (see first attachment) I Zip-stripped the paint off the steering column and associated molding and painted it gray, as the IP code calls for.  I was also fortunate enough to find a new rubber boot/seal for the steering column where it meets the firewall. I also added air vents.  Looks much better (IMHO).

Also, if you intend to install a factory Henry J heater of any model; the 100171 (the most common one), the 100302 (Recirculating model) or the 100238 ('49/'50 Kaiser type) and  you want to connect the hoses, you will need a nipple from the water pump.  If you can't find the KF issue one (part number 201998) I've found that the Ford 66-19301-1 from the Macs catalog is an almost exact replacement.
