1953 2 dr Kaiser
« on: March 19, 2011, 09:22:04 PM »
Hi, Need some input from members, I picked up the 53 Black 2 door 2 years ago . it had been sitting in a 1 car garage in the Oakland California hills since 1961 the speedo reads 56,000 I have a copy of the title signed by the original owner, He had had a heart attack trying to fix the engine.(he died later)  I got it non op licensed and then the fun began, the engine in it was an early 47 Frazer stickw/od. Got a Kaiser engine from Ed Ewing great , had a stick w od from a 53. In hooking up the spedo gear to the tran i was counting gears and checking the rear end ratio, the tag says W 50-11 and the park brake cable is WAY TOO LONG. the springs have 8 leaves 2 are thicker than normal. any one got any ideas??? and what ratio should be in the car to make it a long legged one for trips??    Dusty

Dusty,
I also am putting together a 53K 2Dr.  Ours is a Manhattan.  what Model is yours.  Maybe you could share your Door Post Serial, Data Plate and Body Number Plate Info.  Some of your mysteries may clear up.  On the Emergency Cable - That cable is different on Stick shift and HydraMatic models.  Bet you have the wrong one.

About the springs, either the previous owner added 2 leaves...likely since they're thicker, or he swapped them out with Traveler springs. Kaiser springs have a tendancy to sag over the years due to the weight of the spare and fuel behind the rear axle.

How early is this early 47 Frazer engine?  Is the fuel pump mounted at the rear of the block or the front?

I'v been doing a little research in the 2 door rear end, my books say the rear end came from a jeep/   FC170 pickup the last owner had pulled a boat and traveled into the hills/mountains with it. i've counted the drive shaft and wheel revolutions and it is a 5-11 gear ratio. now i have to pull a rear end from a parts car and all i have are automatic parts cars.with 3.54-1 gears.
