Defroster ducts?
« on: April 15, 2011, 03:59:53 PM »
My question is, on early 51 Henry J's were the heater/defrosters factory or dealer installed or both. My car is an early 51 and it only had one defroster on the passengers side clipped into the factory slot and was half as long as the slot is. Needless to say I'm looking for the factory defroster ducks that would mount in the two screw holes at the end of each duct. Thanks for your help. Don

Don, I'll defer to one of the HJ experts to describe how the cars were originally equipped, but I have the left side kit complete (driver's side) part number 100173 to add the defroster duct, etc. to that side of the car on my list.  Believe I also may have the vent cable/knob for the passenger side; both on my list if I can help.

Don,

Go to these sites to see the installation Instructions of the KF 100171 Heater, KF P/N 100172 RH Fresh Air Duct, and KF P/N 100173 LH Fresh Air Duct. These came out Sept 1950.

Here are the Parts & Accessory Bulletins:

The KF P/N 100238 Heater - Recirculating - Henry J was released on Nov 1950. Here is the Parts & Accessory Bulletin:

Go to Lowell Fideler's website http://home.comcast.net/~ljfid/hj_accs.htm about the middle of the page.

All these heaters could be dealer installed.

Note: Thanks to Lowell and Jim Betts for these great internet sites.

The 100173 mentioned, is a left side fresh air duct not a defroster duct vent. The parts listed in the Henry J parts books show the heater kits come with both defroster ducts and nozzles so if yours has only one that is half the length it is likely an aftermarket item installed at a later time. Most Henry Js did not have a heater and those that did were likely dealer installed and thus would have the complete/correct parts. The heater also requires the 100172 passenger side fresh air duct to allow the air to circulate through the heater core and into the passenger compartment.

Whoops, Lowell, you are correct 100173 is the fresh air duct...I learned something as well!  However, it's listed as the LH Side so wouldn't that be the driver's side, not the passenger side?

I think what Don is talking about is truely the Defroster Ducts. I think he has a Defroster Nozzel (Left or Right) for the KF P/N 100238 Heater.  They do not cover the whole slot in the upper dash. The part number for the Nozzel is KF P/N 212195 (Left) and 212196 (Right).

Here are the diagram and parts list for the KF P/N 100238 Heater.

Here is the Parts & Accessory Bulletin for the KF P/N 100302 Heater. It was released on Dec 1951 and replaced the KF P/N 100238 Heater. Note: It does not replace the KF P/N 100171-172-173 Heater & Fresh Duct Kits.

Thanks fellows' ,you are all a wealth of information and I honored to receive your help. My heater is indeed a 100238 dealer installed unit as per your info. The drivers side smaller defrost duct is missing from somewhere in the past. I can also see that the "fresh air heater" has better designed ducts that fit the slots and screw holes. If any one has a 212915 left side duct and the s clips #2123978 for the first style unit or the new and improved fresh air heater defroster ducts  #212674 & 212675, I would be interested in buying them. Again, many thanks to you all. Don
