Wheel Cylinders
« on: July 24, 2011, 01:51:57 PM »
Hi
I need help finding the application on some Wagner wheel cylinders . I'm sure they are not KF but got them with some KF stuff and would like to find out what they are for . I have checked all my Wagner books and cross references from other manufactures but no luck . Maybe someone has the right book to find these . The numbers are FD-9021 and FD-9022 . Thank you in advance for your help .

According to Wagner-Lockheed 1950 issue catalog AU-500  FD-9021 and FD-9022 are wheel cylinders for 1949 Ford cars; 9021 is LH, 9022 is RH.

49 Ford???  I thought I read somewhere, perhaps here on the Forum some time back, that this Ford part is can actually interchange for a Kaiser part. Memory is quite faulty, but perhaps not for 47-50(51) models, but 51-55 Kaisers?? Perhaps that is why it is in with the Kaiser parts stash!

Hi
Thanks for the answer to my question Jack . My Wagner book is a 1960 model and shows a differant number for 49 Ford . Could it be they changed or updated their numbers in later years ? That would explain why i couldn't find those particular numbers.

You've probably seen it other places including K-F parts books..new numbering systems, change in company ownership, etc, causes new numbering sequences.

That's why I tried to find as many of the older parts books as I could during the 1980's.  I saw older numbers at swap meets but had no way to figure out what was what and the vendors didn't have the info either.  I could also use the older numbers to see about cross-references to other years/makes.

Ford completely changed their brakes for the all new (yes, really all new) 49 models.
The Ford 49-53 master cylinder interchanges with the 51-55 Kaisers.
The 49-53 Ford wheel cylinders do not interchange.
OK, now to confuse readers, the 39-48 Ford wheel cylinders are stepped like the KF units and they can be used on 47-55 Kaiser or 47-51 Frazer...
BUT the size of the hole for the flexible inlet hose is bigger on the Fords. You will have to find an adapter or go through an old paper catalog to find a flexible hose with the right size fittings. A 49 Frazer I did a brake job on had one of these Ford wheel cylinders with an adapter. It was the only wheel cylinder working on the car - that's why the car didn't pull to the side when you stepped on the brakes.
At one time one of the big KF parts vendors was selling the 39-48 Ford wheel cylinders as KF replacements without mentioning the inlet hole problem.

I am using the 39-48 wheel cylinders with a steel reducer, they worked out fine.

New reproductions of both front and rear wheel cylinders are available from Willow Run KF Parts for the slabsiders, Henry J, Darrin and 1951-55 Kaisers.  These are complete with the wheel cylinder kits installed:  http://kfparts.com/
