Wanted Henry J 6-cyl Camshaft gear
« on: December 28, 2011, 11:48:21 AM »
Anyone have a new cam gear for the 161 6-cyl? I've tried several suppliers without any luck.

Thanks
Ken

Thanks Fid. I tried them both, but the gear seems to be no longer available. I was told they might be able to get one, not sure. Hoping someone here has one, otherwise I will see if they can get one from whoever their supplier is.

Ken,

Which gear are you looking for the all metal small gear or the large Phenolic gear?

The small metal gear looks like this one on eBay  http://www.ebay.com/itm/642477-CRANKSHAFT-GEAR-WILLYS-L6-161-24-TEETH-NOS-/250061423627?hash=item3a38d2840b&item=250061423627&pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

You might want to check with Jungle Jim Willy to see if they have stock on one or the other gear:  http://www.willysjeepparts.com/Camshaft_And_Timing_Gears.htm

There were two different cam gears used on the 161 six. The one on the 1951/52 Henry J is KF part number 208807. The one used on the 1953 Js was a little thinner, 1 7/32" wide and it's KF part number 214387.  The one that was used on the earlier cars is a bit wider but I believe they interchange. The crossref numbers are Micro Test 8-2904 also Willys 804999 or Willys 642516

General note of caution on fiber gears.  Pontiac used fiber gears for the timing chain in the mid-1960's; we had a prototype Grand Prix and when a tooth chipped off, it cracked the gear and it broke in pieces.  Luckilly, I was getting off Interstate 94 a bit east of Madison when it happened, rather than in fast moving tight traffic.  We had to tow the car home and when fixed dad had them replace the broken fiber gear and all the other  fiber gears with metal.

Thanks for the leads everyone - we are actively pursuing several, will see if it succeeds.

We really should have both gears. It still worked, but the fiber cam gear is worn and the crank gear has some "fissures" caused by rust. I can't find a number on the crank gear, but the cam gear is 642516, and the gear measures .900" wide. If we can't find a set we might go with the E-bay crank gear.

Although still interested if anyone has one!

Thanks again
Ken

Hey Ken, can't quite remember if we actually met at your dad's place, but I'm on PEI too.

I hear that OEM fibre gears might be getting fragile from age, so new is better; too bad its not a Studebaker where you can get a billet aluminum timing gear.

Thanks for the help everyone. A set of gears is on the way, and so is an intake gasket.

Jim - I don't think we have ever met, but I am reading you Kaiser book right now!

Ken,

Can you share who the supplier(s) is/are on the gears that you purchased?

Nope, I never wrote a Kaiser book. I lent a bunch of old Bulletins and some books etc to Ken's father, Doug...and Ken is very likely enjoying my copy of the  "The Last Onslaught on Detroit."

(the "guilty party" for that book could take a small bow if he so desires. I HEARTILY recommend it to anyone as a book to buy and keep and have even brought it along for my Studebaker friends to see)

The book is very good, I greatly enjoyed it!

The gears are coming from:

http://www.kfparts.com/

but it seems like he is running out.
