Bermuda Tan Script FS/ Polar Grey Script? Virginian?
« on: April 21, 2012, 10:22:20 AM »
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1949-1950-Kaiser-Custom-Model-K492-Bermuda-Tan-fender-script-two-N-O-S-/320889785760?hash=item4ab6858da0&item=320889785760&pt=Vintage_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&vxp=mtr

This is on ebay, thought it was interesting. My Virginian has nothing on it's front fenders and no mounting holes as far as I can tell.

Does anybody have a Polar Grey script for sale or a Virginian script ?  Would it be necessary to be authentic or could the front fender script be deleted?

WOW. No sooner had I posted this then I moved a few spots down on my 49 Kaiser ebay search and here it is:

Are these being put on here by a long time KF member?  I placed a bid on the Polar Grey. Now I hope that would be authentic!

And going down through the search this same seller has a LOT of the 49-50 colors in these NOS scripts. Very cool. It is tempting to change colors or buy some of these in case I buy other 49-50 Virginian projects (or convertibles)    He makes it seem like these would be acceptable for Kaiser Deluxe cars (non Virginian, etc) but my understanding is no.

Lots of cool colors, Cascade Green, Cardinal, Flax, another shade of grey, Caribbean Coral, other greens, so tempting.....

The seller is Charlotte Dayton, former KFOC President. She's trustworthy. As far as scripts for the Virginian go, according the 1949 Parts list that pnw_oldmags  posted, the Virginian should have two fender scripts which read "Virginian", part number 205634.

Fid, Thanks for the information on the seller. Too bad she is not active on this forum.  As for the use of script Virginian, trying to find a NOS set will be next to impossible - or good used - so Polar Gray will have to work.

Of course I know some of the history of these scripts - that they were to be used or intended to be used on Virginians and convertibles. Hopefully it will be OK to put them on my front fenders.

Rudy Phillips has the Virginian scripts listed in his 2010 Catalog. He likely still has them. Same part number posted, $65 apiece.

Production prototypes had "Hardtop" script on the fenders of Virginians; you see this in the earlier sales literature for the full 1949 line-up.  Otherwise you WILL (or at least if the judges know what they are doing) lose points if you put the color name on the fenders instead of Virginian script.

I saw the picture in the latest KFOC Bulletin features a car with "Hardtop" script on it.

I decided to purchase the POLAR GREY script and have received them.  They are NOS with a tag on them.  I have thoroughly inspected my current front fenders and there are no mounting holes present and no Virginian scripts. I may still locate them in the car.

The car will be restored to be original but will likely never be a KFOCI show car.  The car is a mess and just getting it back on the road will be an accomplishment.

I understand that POLAR GREY or whatever color script is not correct but it is curious that these COLOR scripts were manufactured with an intent at installation on a deluxe KF.  If they are not acceptable for a VIRGINIAN are they considered correct for Kaiser Deluxes?

For reasons unknown at this time, the company decided to put the exterior paint color (lead color on two-tones) on 1949-50 Kaiser Deluxe 4-door sedans and convertibles (K4921/K5021 and K4922/K5022 versions) rather than "deluxe" or other script.  Vagabonds had "Vagabond" script on the fenders, Virginians had "Virginian" or depending on interior appointments, "Custom Virginian".  It is also theroetically possible to find "hardtop" on the front fenders but these would have to literally be the first couple of cars built with body numbers and other numbers to prove it.

Also, KFOCI HANDBOOK Version 4.0 notes the script information in the appropriate sections on 1949-50 Kaiser Deluxe model types.
