year model question
« on: April 27, 2013, 09:01:49 AM »
Have purchased a Willys Jeep 4 wheel drive which i believe is a 1946 CJ 2A but would like to get it confirmed so i can get an accurate bill of sale .
The serial numbers on the tag ( Right side of firewall ) is 57348  32068 .
Any help is appreciated and thank you in advance for your help .

57348 corresponds to the CJ3B line, the Jeep with the high hood for the F-head 4 cylinder engine. Serial number 32068 would put it at 1956.

i BELIEVE IT IS OLDER THAN 1956 AS IT HAS THE 134 L HEAD . LOW FLAT HOOD AND VACUUM WIPERS AT THE BOTTOM OF THE WINDSHIELD . IT ALSO HAS " WILLYS " STAMPED ON BOTH SIDES OF THE HOOD AND AT THE TOP OF THE GRILL . THE THIRD CHART YOU SENT LOOKS TO ME AS A 1946 BUT I AM NOT SURE IF I AM READING IT CORRECTLY .
THANKS JIM

Mike,
The serial number on your Jeep should start with either CJ2 or CJ2A. I think someone swapped tags with a later unit. There should also be a tag on a front frame horn near the bumper mount. Check there and let us know what you find.

If you check the KFOCI HANDBOOK, you will find the CD contains a section on Willys vehicle serial numbers.  Information on model types and serial number ranges comes from various Willys Motors Inc. issued parts books.  What you are looking for should be there.

It is very plane on your picture that it is a Cj-2 . The tag on mine is different . Looking at the body features , running gear and so on makes me think someone changed the plate . The story goes that the Jeep was bought new by his Grandfather and has been in the family ever since . I think the guy is being truthful as to what he knew or was told by his Father and Grandfather but when i get it home i will check the frame numbers and post some pictures . I need an education on the type Jeep .

I'm not real familiar with this group of Willys vehicles, but I do know that CJ's were built and assembled all over the world. Is it possible that yours was built elsewhere and ended up in the US, hence the different VIN tag?
