Henry J's Without Opening Trunk
« on: May 29, 2014, 03:03:13 PM »
Hi All,

Maybe I missed the info somewhere, but the question is: How many Henry J's were built WITHOUT the opening trunk?? Mine is a 1951 HJ solid back end.

I don't know if there's any solid numbers on this. My personal observation has been that about half of the '51s  produced did not have a deck lid. Most '52 and '53s do. As noted in a discussion on here last fall, the '52-'54 Corsairs were available without a deck lid but the Corsair Deluxe had a deck lid. Even given that info, very few of the Corsairs didn't have a deck lid. In fact, the first time I saw a '53 Corsair without a deck lid was 10 years ago and I've been messing with Henry Js my whole life. Contrary to popular myth, many '51 four cylinders have a trunk lid and a lot of '51 four cylinders have both a trunk lid and folding rear seat.

We are redoing 2 right now a 52 Corsair, no deck lid and a 53 Allstate, with a deck lid. The 52 is almost complete but the Allstate will be at least another year. They will not be original but they  will be weekend drivers and not points cars.

I have a 51 no trunk and a 53 trunk.

Perhaps someone could put a sticky on here that would keep a total of our cars that are still around. Maybe not a lot of detail, just weither they are trunk/ no trunk, 4 or 6 cyl, keeping it simple. Henry.

Three things to consider:
1.  The deck lid first appeared in an Accessory Group at the end of calendar year 1950.  By then, around 40,000 HJ's were produced out of around 80,000 actual cars.
2.  The no deck lid was available in either a 4 or 6 in 1952 (vagabond or corsair)
3.  1953 Corsair Deluxe models came with the Accessory that had deck lid, Corsair models could be ordered without deck lid & all 1954's had deck lid.

Roughly 40-50% or so of all HJ's produced were made without deck lids during the production life of the car.

While it is outdated, and not all entries are complete, the online car registry may help -

http://www.eskimo.com/~hhagen/reg/reg.htm

A '51 Deluxe (K514) with AG 8 would not have a trunk lid.
The K513 without an AG will not have a trunk lid.  Again, not all entries have all columns filled in so take that for what it's worth.
