Question about Serial Number
« on: September 08, 2014, 10:39:02 AM »
Last year I sold my 53 Dragon to a gentleman, who is now questioning why the serial number is higher than 1,277, the number of Dragons produced.  I tried to explain that the serial numbers were for all Kaisers, not just that specific model, but he did not seem to get it, and to be honest, I am not an expert on this topic.  So, let me put my numbers here, and perhaps someone (Jack?) could interpret them for me so I can explain it to the new owner?  I can interpret the trim options, etc., but I will put them here anyway.  These are the numbers:
Serial No. K530-001521
Body No. 5301-1587
PAINT TRIM 097 5308
DR 1
TR 7
AG 00
SCH 62
ITEM 457

One thing to keep in mind, the serial numbers do not start with '1.'  Most started at 1001, and that is true of the '53 Dragon. So your car was the 521st one.

That makes sense.  So was it actually the 521st Dragon, or the 521st 53 Kaiser?

The model is part of the VIN so it was the 521st '53 Dragon.  A '53 Deluxe is model K531, a '53 Manhattan a model K532, Carolina K538 and '53 Dragon is K530. The info is the latest handbook- good stuff.

Yes, Sterling Weber bought this car new I'm pretty sure.  Sterling was my neighbor, and the man who fostered my interest in KF vehicles when I was quite young, and is probably the whole reason I am in the club.  He also had a beautiful 50 Frazer with an almost perfect interior--the doors on that thing slammed shut just like an old refrigerator, and all the seals, everything were perfect, almost like a brand new car.  He also had a 49 Traveler or Vagabond with about 14,000 miles, and a 47/48 Frazer he was restoring, for which he got NOS seats.  He showed them to me in the factory boxes.  Had a 54 Manhattan as well, and quite a few other cars of different makes.  Sadly Sterling passed away several years ago.

You will find all kinds of information on Dragon in KFOCI HANDBOOK.  This includes serial number information and other good stuff.
