Oil Pressure Again
« on: November 11, 2009, 06:36:03 PM »
I've been reading some of the old posts on oil pressure but thought I'd start a new one.  First of all, I got a new sending unit from NAPA, which seems to work.  However, the oil pressure was VERY low when it warmed up.  I did as Fid advised and put as many spacers as I could in the pressure relief valve and brought it up slightly, but it's still running low--about 15-20 psi hot at speed.  I am currently using 10w40 oil.  Would it be beneficial to put 20W50 in it, or is there anything else I can do?  I am in Texas and we rarely freeze during the winter so I don't think 20W50 should be a problem that way, and I'm not sure what else I can do.

Use 30W oil if possible. That'll help keep the pressure up. The problem is that the pump housing is cast iron but the gear cover is stamped steel. Over time, the cover warps and lets oil escape...dropping pressure. The only real fix is to correct the problem at the pump. But, in the meantime, use 30W oil, it did the trick for my 53K.
