Willys Drum Size

  I am first time user. What is the minimum inside diameter size for my 1955 Willys Custom's drums? I have my brake shoes adjusted up as tight as I can and it still does not stop real well ( even for drum brakes). I am assuming that too little metal is left.
    By the way, there is still time to register and show your KFW cars at the Lakeland Fl Carlisle Events car show that we are participating in. Out of the 25 vehicles that we have registered we have eight that have the Willys name on them and another seven that had the Willys engines. We do have the 1963 Brazilian Willys 2600 from Bill Tilden's estate also showing up. Please let me know if you are interested in a few days of sunshine and a great car show!

Today's lining compound is harder than what was originally used. Make sure the drum's braking surface isn't glazed and it helps to scuff the lining surface a bit.

About the drum, it's a 9" unit and according to the shop manual, it shouldn't be turned more than .030" - resulting in a drum that's .060" oversize.

One other thing to consider if your drums have been turned recently or your shoes have low miles is that they might improve by being arched to match the drum radius. They will eventually wear to match the drums without arching though.

If it is rear drum. Is your emergency brake cable free ? I found mine were frozen and kept the shoes from moving freely when I installed new shoes. It may seem adjusted as tight  as it will go.
