If it helps identify it I was able to read --???? Hurricane -- on the head.

aren't the crankshafts different for stick and automatics????   Will one work for both?

Yes, crankshafts do differ.

This particular engine is the 51-55 version but would need some bits and pieces from a Kaiser engine to be used in a Kaiser. The oil pan is different as is the water outlet. I don't know if the clutch fork and linkage differs but that could be something to consider as well.

It's a Super Hurricane engine. All the 1954 Aero Larks had either the F-head (Hurricane 6) or L-head (Lightning 6) 161 engines, not the 226 Super Hurricane. The 226 was available in the 1954 Aces and Eagles only. Someone must've done a swap. it's still basically the same engine that the Kaisers used with a different head.

Ok, the engine pictured comes with a stick, would it work with an automatic?   I am sure it has a pilot bushing at the end of the crank.  If you remove the bushing, will it work with an automatic????

A Kaiser or Frazer 226  engine with automatic will not fit a manual transmission or vice versa. The rear of the crankshaft is different between the two and won't bolt up.  I got this info  from the Hollander interchange manual. Other than the crankshafts the 51-55 automatic and manual engines are the same.
