Gas cap info
« on: March 15, 2016, 04:35:41 PM »
None of my original gas caps has a decent gasket so I went looking for a vintage paintable cap or even a stainless one. I stumbled across some cross referenced vehicles, the easiest & most common being '38 to '70 Chevy trucks which take a vented cap.
Some of the NOS chevy caps I saw have a ring stamped into the dome of the cap but not the new one I bought.

I got a paintable one, GM#3914958  Not a perfect copy but pretty close.

I was thinking about trying this one.....http://www.ebay.com/itm/52-53-54-55-56-Willys-Aero-Chrome-Gas-Fuel-Cap-Stainless-Steel-Replacement-/311377963750?hash=item487f92aae6:m:mn1IMrDf-xzndg2Riy3yQOw&vxp=mtr
The original stainless ones i've got have domed tops and knurled edges. I didn't really beat the bushes too much for stainless since my car had an unplated one painted body color.

Here's photos from the auction (now expired/sold) I ran across with the cross reference info. Chevy continued to use this vented cap till 1970 which made it easy to find new. Vintage caps do turn up fairly regularly.

This was a Stant cap, I called the factory and they didn't have any info for an Aero although there's a new totally smooth stainless Stant cap listed for Aero's sometimes.
