Title: Kaiser rear axle nuts
Post by: checker on January 28, 2017, 12:41:48 PM
Hi guys,

Just finished doing the brakes on my 51 Deluxe.

Found that the rear axle nuts differ a bit from one another and they show wear.
I would like to replace them.

Can I get compatible ones at my auto part store ? If so, is there a part number for those ?

Thanks.

Found that the rear axle nuts differ a bit from one another......................

When I disassembled my Aero I found one axle nut had a round tapered "crown" machined on it, the flats on the other side were flat all the way up. One of many things I found on my Lark not quite "according to Hoyle".

The parts manual says it's a 7/8"x14 axle nut. It also states that it's 1 5/16" across the flats. The original nut would have been crowned. I would imagine someone here will have a good used one.

Sounds same as on my 54 Manhattan.  You can get them new from Dorman.  My local O'Rilley guy found several to chose from...take one you want to match and compare.  Some were "taller" than others making cotter hole line up different.

Do check threads on axle while there...clean if needed...takes a good load to pull hub down taper.

Also, I put a bit of RTV under nut/threads,  as grease/oil came down the keyway and out on mine.....thought it was from seal, but not.

7/8" X 14 (1 5/16" across) Castle Nuts, Dorman part number 814-068, can be found at RockAuto for under 5$ ea.

I will check them out.

Thanks for the info guys.
