What was the reason that some were made in 2 pieces, bottom Frazer part being separate?
Possibly knowing that Frazer was on his way OUT?
-
My guess shipping. Mine is one piece, however.

That is a great question and I hope that someone knows the answer. The two piece signs are harder to find and there was one on display at Prescott this year. I've never seen anything other than the Frazer bottom section on one of the signs but I have seen a couple of them for sale and missing that bottom section.

I've seen a couple with Willys at the bottom. I believe the changeable lower section occurred at about the same time as the Willys merger. This allowed dealers to advertise both lines.

Mine is a 2pc. There was a K-W version there when I bought mine. Colors were different: red, white, blue.

The non round sign is a two sided neon version. The 5 foot diameter signs originally came with a black painted outer ring and attachments for attaching to a pole or building plus lighting from above the sign. There was also a neon version with amber yellow "service", blue "approved" and the outside border in red. Apparently all dealers got the round sign for display and they cost $62.50 from Reliance Advertising Co. in Chicago. The various neon signs were optional at extra cost. There were at least three booklets about ordering K-F Signs and many styles of neon signs and outdoor reflectorized road signs were available. The red, white and blue Kaiser Willys signs started to appear in 1953 when Willys was absorbed into Kaiser. Maybe someone has a picture of the two piece Kaiser sign with Willys at the bottom that Jim has seen and that will answer the question of why they made some of the signs in two pieces.

Gordie, that would be impossible. The brochures for the signs were made around 48, 49, and 50. Kaiser Frazer had no connection to Willys at that time.

I have never seen one my self but I was going by the fact that Jim has seen them. Kaiser Willys seems to have had new signs ready for the merger . My last dated sign folder is from 1951 and includes Henry J neon but the Henry J came out fairly early in 1950. A folder announcing Kaiser Willys signs is in black and white and also has illustrations of 1953 K-W products along with the newly designed K-W signs. You have a super K-F-W display on your wall!

Thanks Gordie, Jim is usually right but I am not sure this time. Because I am sure they were making the split sign in the 1940s and they had no name connection to Willys at that time.

It would be interesting to know if anyone has the blue and yellow sign with Willys on the bottom. I have never seen one.
