Title: Darrin Accessory covers (fasteners)
Post by: njpatera on June 20, 2018, 12:28:03 PM
Trivial question, but if I’m trying to salvage some of the originals I may as well get what was there. That said, the baskets are toast(I’ll find some more later as I have a replacement set), but the fasteners are so corroded and unrecognizable I can’t make out the correct size...shot in the dark guess for the slotted oval head machine screws holding the stainless to the baskets is 3/16 x 5/16...am I close? How about the thread pitch? Again, I’m working with good old Ohio corrosion:-/

Here's what's on mine. The screws look like 1/4x20 by half inch. Note the flat washer with the shaved sides.

Thank you! I did have one of the shaved washers that survived:-)  Looks like a little grinder time tomorrow.

They are the wire wheel covers...not the full caps

now I get it

again..after rebuild, only  you would know if the fastener is slotted or phillips and phillips are easier to work with

They are 1/4-20.
Ace hardware should have the bolts and square nuts.
A vice grip works well for grinding the washers.

Thank you all! I picked up a random set of the inner mounting baskets. Wrong size height wise but it has all the mounting washers and nuts. Machine screws were wrong but now I can get the correct ones:-)
I was able to free up one of the original baskets and out of the stainless it measures 2-1/4 in height. I have a set of 3” and a set of 2-1/2” in height. Has anyone had luck cutting them down to the proper height so they are not sticking out from the wheel? I haven’t had any luck locating the correct ones...not that I need them now...lol She’s far from moving.

I have a fuzzy idea of the piece you're thinking about cutting, maybe try something like this?

Here's a shot cutting down an air cleaner with an inexpensive hardware store cutoff wheel & arbor in drill press. Table height sets your cut location and as long as you keep your piece flat you get an even cut. Definitely not OSHA approved but it worked for me.

That is a great easy idea!
