Title: Cuba Willys
Post by: vettelang on March 06, 2019, 08:38:12 AM
We just got back from a cruise to Havana. 56 Chevy was the volume leader. We saw a number of Willy's wagons driving around. Was really surprised to see a yellow Aero go by. The things you see when your camera is not ready!

Under Castro's regime no new cars were allowed into Cuba for fifty years so the Cubans had to make do with whatever had come into their country from Florida and the Gulf Coast after WWII.  A set of postcards from Europe show many 1940's-'50's cars in amazing condition considering they could not get replacement parts and had to improvise on mechanical and body parts for all of those years.

Before there was Castro there was Batista.  Here's a picture of him from 1953. Look closely, the car he's in is a Henry J

Here's a pic of an Aero from Cuba that I found a few years ago somewhere on the internet. Note the replacement windshield and the reworking of the A-pillars to fit it.

The one I saw was bright yellow. There may be two down there or this one had a repaint. Nice picture!
