Title: Hydra-Matic Reverse On Hill
Post by: Bob G on January 16, 2020, 11:22:46 AM
After backing up a somewhat steep driveway hill, for about '40-50', transmission ('54 Special) will most of the time not go into drive unless shifter is first moved into neutral and back to drive. Any advice on this please?

Check your motor and transmission mounts to see if they are worn and possibly shifting a little when you change direction on the car.

Motor mounts will be checked. Thanks

Transmission mounts to be checked also. Will be done as soon as some warmer weather allows. Thanks again.

I think the issue is fluid related. Reverse in 52-up hydramatics is accomplished using a pump and I’d be willing to bet it’s the culprit. I also think the behavior seen is to be expected in this scenario.

Transmission was very recently rebuilt, which I believe included the pump, but that of course doesn't mean the pump isn't the problem. Thanks
