Title: gunky breather cap
Post by: DH Comet on February 18, 2020, 08:18:25 PM
Hi folks,
Is it worthwhile to clean out the oil breather cap?  If so, what's the best approach?  Or should I just shell out the probably not much money for a new one?
Thx!

Page 334 in the lubrication chart in the shop manual states the oil breather cap (oil filler cap) should be cleaned with kerosene, dried and soaked with engine oil every 2,000 miles. I clean mine every spring. Don't know how much difference it makes as I always keep it clean.

Soaking in most solvents will loosen/dissolve the crud, messy but effective. I soaked mine in a bucket of carb cleaner, followed by spraying all the openings & mesh with spray carb cleaner. Worked great and stripped paint too, which was what I wanted. Your OEM cap may have stampings not on a replacement, so check before replacing.

I think I'll clean it.  It does have "Oil" stamped in it and it looks pretty original.
Thanks!
