Title: re idler arm replacement
Post by: kf5336 on August 20, 2022, 02:58:56 PM
I replaced the idler arm bushings and pin with a kit I bought from Willow Run KF Parts.  Everything assembled  and steering was tight. But now a few weeks later, some minor looseness has reappeared. There is no spec for tightening the upper and lower bushing nuts and mechanic who did work is a bit hesitant as to just how tight the upper and lower bushings should be He does not want to have the bushing nuts 'bottom out'. Previous advice was not to overtighten bushings, but how tight is tight?  I did contact Rudy for an idler arm to have just in case but he had 2 possibilities depending on casting number which I was unable to provide.
Again thank you for any advice,

One quick way to tell, is to watch the idler for movement while you move the steering wheel back and forth. Keep the wheels on the ground in the straight ahead position. If the idler arm is moving up and down, then tighten it until the movement is pretty much gone. then road test to make sure the steering wheel returns to center after a turn.
