Title: 53 manhattan motor replacement question

Hi Everybody,

We have a '53 manhattan and are considering replacing the engine.  An old neighbor of ours has a NOS 6 cyl flathead continental 'crate' engine he bought as surplus. It looks in good shape and is painted a medium gray.

He thinks it was intended for use in a forklift and is not sure if it will fit in right and match up with the auto tranny, and engine compartment in our "53 man...   was saying something about the water pump mounting may not be correct as well.

Any clues into researching the replacement engine and any tips or hints in starting this project will be greatly appeciated.

The Continental Motors 226 engines were advertised in the KFOCI newsletter a few times; the engine and transmission are a matched set as I understand it due to something dealing with the crankshaft, i.e., auto vs. "rare" 3-speed with OD.

Correct, those that use the Hydra-Matic transmission have a different crankshaft than those that have the manual. Don't know why, just know that is the case.  Good luck.

i found that any engine that ive ever seen used in a tractor or forklift has a different cam than a car or truck.
dont know if that flathead engines are like this
