I have a '51 Henry J Deluxe without overdrive and I am aware that I can get a higher gear ratio by installing an overdrive. I have done some research and have been told a middle '70s MustangII or Maverick will bolt right into my J. My J is pretty much bone stock and it is not a hotrod, I just would like to drive 60mph at lesser rpms.
Any thoughts, ideas, or information would be greatly appreciated.

Guys are using 80's something S10 2 wheel drive diff's( not the pickup).

There ain't no such thing as "bolt in". Whether or not this is a true statement is immaterial. Your automotive life will have fewer unpleasant suprizes if you accept it.
KFOCIer Paul Harrelson in Kings Mountain N.C. has(or had) a 51 Henry J with a S10 rear end. It looked store bought. Whether it came that way or was the result of Paul's excellent craftsmanship I can not say.Paul is a really nice guy and I'm sure he will be happy to answer any questions.

I don't know about the s 10 but Mike at henryjcars.com said he bolted a 74 or 75 MustangII right into his Allstate,and 51 J he also said a 70s Maverick would fit right in. I haven't tried either one, but i'm going to measure my rear end flange to flange to see. I know they have the same bolt pattern as I have Ford wheels on my J. I also could change the ring and pinion on a Ford 8" rear end fairly easily to get the gearing I want.
