Title: distributor install

I got my dist all cleaned up and ready to install but can't seem to figure out the mounting for it,as it was out of the engine when I got the car. I think I might be missing some stuff. All I have is the plate that bolts to the bottom of the dist and the shaft that goes in the top of the head Does anybody have a picture I can look at to see what o might need?

Here's a picture...I realize it's not the best, but it should help. The long adapter shaft runs down into the head and then the distributor bolts to the head. If the car backfires when you try to start it, the distributor is 180 degrees out. The distributor only mates to the adapter one way because of an offset tab on the bottom of the distributor. Reinstall it and try again. Note in the picture where the vacuum advance is...use it as a guide when lining up your distributor.

According to all my manual pictures the dist. vacuum advance sticks straight out toward the drivers side of engine.

Be careful when you source the adapter as there are at least two different styles. Attached are a couple of pictures. The unit on the left is used with Autolite distributors and the one on the right is for Delco units.

You have a 49-50 car with the Autolite distributor. You need the adapter that I have pictured on the left.

I have a 1949 parts car that I believe has a distributor in it.  I am not sure how available they are but if I have one and you need it let me know.

I have an adapter that looks just like this but it's attached to an old, used Autolite distributor.  It has a casting number on the adapter, F600M 235.  Jim, is that the right one?

I fiddled with it a bit and can't seem to figure out how to get it off the base of the distributor (I removed the 2 bolts but it seems to be pressed in or something??   ???

Those adapters get stuck and are hard to remove . Put some water in a pan just deep enough to cover the adapter part and heat it on the stove until the water almost boils . This will swell the adapter a bit and it will come off . Clean the part and lightly sand the inside to clean the gunk out and lightly lube it before installing on your distributor .

Thanks guys, I found one and have it here at the house ready to install.Now see if I can get her fired up before I have to leave for work tonight.
