Removed our rear shocks for clean up.
I can move them in and out by hand.
Does this indicate it is time to replace them?

I would say yes to that. Chances are you need fronts as well.
-
What shocks would you suggest be put on a 1953 Willys Aero Lark 4-Door?
-
Stock rear shocks are available, fronts are hard to find, if at all.I was looking for my own car, looks like 1960 Corvette rear shocks will do nicely as fronts. I haven't tried it, but found the info on a few forums. I would also like to find a cross reference for brake shoes, as they are not listed anywhere I can find. They are 9x2

I believe Monroe 31094 works on the rear. Monroe has an online lookup catalog. For the fronts you need the extended length, the compressed length (the difference is the travel) and the types of ends (loop, stem, ...). There should be some close alternatives. Good Luck.

Years ago, Chuck Schnetlage researched the shocks and told me that the 1960 Corvette rears work on the Aero fronts with minor mods to the mountings. Chuck was affiliated with Monroe shocks back then (1979?).
-
Can you describe the minor mods required??
-
I do not remember the mods, just changes in the washers or spacers I think. I believe those shocks are still mounted on my car.

I ordered some so I will document what comes off and how it goes back on. :D
